Having built a 5E3 deluxe from a tubedepot kit a couple of months ago and having been pretty pleased with the result a minor disaster occured doh.

Due to some problems with a couple of pedal power supply chords having a bad contact a VERY harsh and loud buzz rattled through the amp/speaker.

:(

The result all i get now is a loud buzz from the amp, trying a different cabinet it looks like the Jenson P12R is kaput.

So having a blank canvass does anyone here have any recommendations different to the Jenson.
Looking for a sweet fairly vintage tone not too bothered about good headroom so high sensitivity not a major priority.

Cheers . . .. Al

Have you tried connecting the existing P12R to another amp to confirm that it is in fact hosed?

The P12R is good for 25 watts but, like any loudspeaker, does not like to see square waves, especially in max power scenarios. The spec speaker for a 5E3 is a P12Q (30 watts) and you might consider it for a replacement if the P12R is shot.

Thanks Arjay

Only had a quick chance to try the amp with an outboard cab with a weber blue pup in it and all was pretty much similar with the amp before the horrendous noise that eminated.

Ill make sure before i get a replacement but early signs are the speaker really suffered.
Daft thing was i knew the dc input jack to the O/D pedal id built (a BYOC) was shite but like a twit i left it too long.

If your P12R was an original Chicago-built Jensen I'd advise you to have it repaired. But if it's an offshore re-issue it's likely not worth the effort -- a re-cone runs about eighty bucks (around here anyway) and you can often find Italian-made Jensens for less than that on Ebay.

Plot has thickened slightly in the sense that praps the speaker isnt toast.

Hard to tell at the moment because when first tried with the other speaker i have it seemed quiet, now its a lot quieter but not really 100% good using the internal speaker?

Its like 50 Hz (or 60 in the states i guess) buzz but louder than i think it should be, thats with no guitar plugged in.

Wondering now if its valve(s) . . . . . Got JJ 6V6 power valves, ive tried a couple of different preamp valves but that doesnt change the buzz.

Really? Where? The Alnico Jensens are up to almost $140!

I saw a pair of lightly-used import P12Q's on the bay last week for $150 + S&H.

They're out there -- it just takes diligence to find them.
