Hey, can anybody here give me some advice on choosing power tubes for my amp? I have a 212 Deville and I've been using EH 6L6's for a while now. They're a good durable tube, but its time for new ones and I want to try something new. The tubes I'd like to try are the Tung-Sol 5881 Re-issues. I've heard great things about them and I've been thinking about trying them out. The problem, (potetianl problem), is that the EH 6L6's and 20 watt tubes and the Tung-Sol 5881 Re-issues are 25 watt. Is it safe to use a lower wattage tube in the Hot Rod Deville? Also, will I still be able to get the full range of tone out of my amp, and the new tubes?
Any advice/info would be much appreciated!

All you need to do is bias the tubes properly so that the idle power dissipation is no greater than 70% of the maximum power dissipation. If you don't know what that means, ask and do some research, or take your amp to good tech. Touch the wrong thing in an amp and you can die, even if it has been powered off.

BTW: If the EH's are 6L6GCs, they should be 30 watts, not 20 watts. 5881s could be 30 watts, but are most likely rated at 25 watts.

Hi nowrongnotes@gmail.com,

You can use just about any 6L6 or 5881 tubes that you want, as long as you set the bias properly for each set. The EH 6L6 should be a 30 watt tube. Using a lower wattage tube like a 5881 will mean less output wattage from the amp, but 5 watts isn't much difference in sound really. You can even use a set of 6V6 (14 watt), both GT and JJ offer 6V6 that will handle the higher Plate voltage of the Dvl. Using the 6V6 will drop the amp power to roughly half, and the amp will sound completely different than with 6L6.

+1

They sound great in my '68 Bandmaster. And a friend has a pair in an older Prosonic (60-watt platform) that positively screams with the EHX tubes.

Bluesky, with all respect I have to you, 70 % is for me, too hot. I won't go for more 60 % and colder if you like the tone or if you play very loud.

I'll go for 6L6 GC type , they are made for work at higher voltage.
