Hey, my first post and I thought I'd take my problem to the guys who know1

I've had my Ultimate Chorus for a few years, I like others got it cheap. I love the amp. It's loud and has a rich deep sound to it.
I play in an improv band and got a bit crazy and threw it over. The amp started to make these loud farting noises. I brought it to a shop and had it repaired.
I got it home, plugged it in and it started crackling and humming when the guitar is played. I, in anger, I really love the amp, rang the shop owner and brought it round to him again.
He plugged it in and it worked fine! I couldn't believe it. He lent me a replacement amp, A randall 50watt( that amp was great) whilst he sent it back off to be fixed. All free of charge.

I picked it up and it worked 100% great in his shop and again I bring it home plug it in and the crackle and hum is still there the second I plug it in. I move it room to room and use different plugs but no cure.

I think the problem may be my house but I have a Marshall Valvestate and that works fine..

Could be a ghost!

Any ideas?
Please to meet you all.

-Niall.

Check your outlets for proper grounding, could also be static
From your guitar, or even you.
What guitar are you playing through?

Intermittent solder in the power supply. Why is always work fine in the shop ? I see that many time. The tech should look carefully solders and repair it.

major cause is probably noise on your power line. when it gets to your amp, the power supply is supposed to filter out electrical noise. The power supply is the transformer, rectifier, capacitors and voltage regulator and more capacitors. And more capacitors on all the printed circuit boards.

about caps: the big power supply caps work up to a certain frequency range (several KHz) then they stop behaving like capacitors (it's the physics of electrolytic caps). then then are other caps all over and they work to very high frequencies - these are the capacitors distributed all over the printed circuit boards - they are generally power "hold-up" and noise filters at the same time - good practice in any design.

But your problem sounds a lot like an open capacitor or poor solder joint on the power supply as per previous post, or the voltage regualtor itself. The power supply is where i would focus my troubleshooting first.

finally: there could be a shielding problem - your amp could be picking up stray RF somewhere. only way i know to tame this is to put a lot of ferrite beads on the DC supplies (wires off the power supply to the circuit boards) and ferrite beads on AC comming in. I doubt you will able to put the amp circuits in a metal can and shield the amp so it's usually ferite beads and they tend to work.

good luck,
johnny.
