ive read about black plates, grey plates, short, and long plates, made for organs,
im assuming the 12ax7a rca are the best ones?

the tubes my egnater came with are ruby's, not a big fan. but easily swapped.

The 12AX7A is a low-noise commercial equivalent to the old mil-spec 7025. They're commonly used in the 1st/2nd stage pre-amps of the amps designed by Leo Fender and in many of his tremolo circuits. I doubt any benefit would be gained by using one in place of a standard 12AX7 in the Egnater models.

In my Rebel, I replaced V2 with a lower gain tube - a 5751 - to smooth out the structure, and it worked a treat. The amp will still melt faces, but with less of that irritating 2k grittiness that I always hear from an overdriven 12ax7.

The NOS JAN/Phillips 5751s I got from Tube Depot are very nice. In a Tweaker 15, you could try the lower gain tube in V1 (the lone preamp tube) or V3 (which is actually part of the power stage).

+1

The Phillips and Westinghouse 5751's are about the best there is.

before i bought this amp i had contacted the tubestore on an exchange , a rattling tube that they honored for a jan phillips 5751.
the tube should get here this week, i will give it a try.
i did notice the highs were reaching shrill territory in the tone department, not alot though. but somewhat noticable.
after my post, i decided to try one of my mullard 12ax7, considering it tames the highs,
it smoothes the overdrive.

it currently has ruby 6l6's that i would like to change for tungsols 5881's or ri's,
tungsols gc str, tad 6l6 wgc str or something similar.
im still researching those.

Wait until your speaker's break-in phase is complete before swapping bottles. I think you'll find that the tone becomes sweeter and beefier the more the amp is played.

A new amp's "mojo" only begins to develope once its speaker has been fully "incubated".

+1 I recently replaced the speaker (reconed 10inch CTS Alnico) in my '64 Princeton and every time I play it sounds sweeter and sweeter...got about 10 hours on it now and it really does make a difference from when I first put the speaker in.

FWIW

I know you asked about RCA, but you may want to consider the Raytheon 12AX7A (both the NOS US made or 1970-80's Matsushita made ones). These are very good tubes. Good bass and clean high notes. Compliments the Fender tone very well. The Raytheon 5751 is also great, esp the famous "windmill getter" version.

Guys,
I received my Jan phillips 5751 and pit in v1, I also had 2
Jan Phillips 12at7 1 for the PI.
Lowered the volume a bit, but it fattened up the clean tone
Gave it nice bottom end, and rounded up the highs
The mids are just right.
Improved note definition and clarity.
When I add gain to it it fattens even more, and responsive
To pic attack.
IMHO it greatly improved the tone,
I can honestly say the cleans approximate the DRRI sound
Suprisingly well now.

That's what I noticed too. Lowering the first gain stage about 70% lets you push the power tubes a little bit harder, and my Rebel 20 really opened up nicely that way. Like you, I'm getting a nice thick, midrangey clean tone, vey Deluxe... and that Phillips tube just plain sounds good.

Rock, rock on.
