G'day folks,

a friend a mine is interested in purchasing a new amp for his acoustic guitar (since he is in denial and doesn't own a strat ), and is looking at a budget of around $300-$400. Might anyone have any feasible suggestions as to a pretty decent, giggable unit?

Many thanks in advance

I don't have much experience with acoustic amps but I have a Marshall AS50R that I've been using for about 5 or 6 years that works well for me. It is like a small PA with guitar favoritism. Acoustic electrics pickup is a lot like a mic and reflects that way. A lot of guys just plug into the house PA. I personally like the acoustic amp set up because you can set your type of sound before it gets to the soung guy.

Gigable starting price range is around $800-1300. There are some decent home units in the 3-4 range (that can be hooked up to PA's). If straight acoustic is what he is going for, he might want to go with just the mike and PA route. If there isn't a store that carries a wide range of acoustic amps nearby, I'd suggest visiting online stores and review sites to find out what is available and you tube vids for demos. That is what I had to do as only one store in town carried acoustic amps (they only had two). I went with Genz-Benz, btw -- almost went with the Fishman Solo (both out of your friend's range though). I remember there was a Crate in the 400 range that was decent and quite tweakable, but still boxy sounding on its own.

Perhaps giggable may not be necessary, but he loves to jam with friends, myself included. I guess simply, what'll sound good in the mix for a $400 amp?

I know someone who has one of those Crates......his Ovation sounds pretty sweet through it.

I am currently playing my Acoustics through my PA, which is a QSC GX5 amp with a Mackie Onyx 1620i Mixer with two Beri 1520 Pro's really nice sound, but I have been looking at getting a Fender Acoustasonic 150 for a more portable rig....

30 to 50 watts are absolutley gigable but, I wouldn't know about home use. I usually play my acoustics at home without electronics.

I recently bought a new Martin acoustic and tried it out through a Fishman Loudbox Mini. The amp was around $300 and sounded great. It weighs something like 20 lbs. I tried my regular guitar amps and there was just something missing that the Fishman found. I'll probably pick one up soon. I think it could handle some decent size gigs plus it has a direct out.

Alright, already. The new Acoustasonic amps have been advertised at retailers for months, but no sign of them yet. The 100 and 150 seem to be a huge step forward in acoustic amp design. I have my $500 ready whenever Fender decides to pull the trigger.

I think the Fishman Loudbox and Loudbox Mini sound great. You would need to try it out. My Martin has Fishman electronics in it. It could just be it's designed to sound great with their system.

+1 on the Fishman Loudbox range, especially the Fishman Loudbox Performer, though that one may well be outside his budget.

+1 on the Fishman, my acoustic has Fishman electronics in it and it sounds good through a PA.
Plan to obtain a Fishman loudbox mini someday, biggest problem is room to put another bit of gear :?
As under orders to downsize on "stuff" as retirement looms :(
