Hi,

I just picked up a used '94 Fender Twin (100w non-tremolo version) amp in what appeared to be really great condition. This one has the gain channel as well and is switchable down to 25w 1/4 power.

I let the tubes heat up and then took it for it's first test drive on full power at 100w....It didn't sound that great (shouldn't have bought it sight unseen) and so I continued to turn up the clean channel volume and was astonished that I got up to 9 or so on the dial and it wasn't really very loud. I could stand right in front of it quite comfortably and play. I switched down to the 25w state and the volume dropped a bit but not much at all. I have a '65 RI Twin Reverb and would say that at 2 on the volume on it is way louder than 9 on the '94 in question.

My first thought was that there was an issue with the tubes so I took it to my local "tube amp" specialist and he said the tubes were fine and that it is a deeper issue that will require more time.

Has anyone seen this issue just so I can maybe help pin point a possible problem for him?

Thanks,
Derek

Hi dschaaf,

Are you saying that your amp is at the shop and you don't have it at the moment?

Hi, thanks for your reply.....yes it is at the shop at the moment. The amp tech, who is very well known in our area for his work with tube amps (and is also a friend) did say that there is definitely something wrong. I was just curious if anyone else had a similar issue that could help me give him some quick direction.

Thanks,
Derek

Well without the thing in front of me and you saying there is low volume with out knowing anything else i would say it's the output tubes or a bad output transformer

I'm on here right now because of the same problem. I have a 1998 Fender Princeton Chorus (solid state) that I love but have always had to mic my amp because the "clean channel" has pathetic low volume even when turned all the way up. However, it's been that way since it was new. Is this normal? Can't believe it is. Ready to take it to get it checked out but wondered if anybody else has had this problem? Thanks.

....just an update

I took it to a local Luthier (who also does a fair bit of tube amp repair...more hand wired stuff) and he confirmed that the tubes seemed to be fine ad is stumped as to what the issue is. I am now taking it to a tube amp repair specialist (who lives a few hours away) to have it looked at.

I just fired it up again and re-tested the clean channel and noticed that mot only is the volume way low (on the full 100w setting) but the tone is not clean and "chimey" like it is on my '65 RI Twin reverb but rather fairly dirty and distorted....

Thanks,
Derek

My red knob twin did that too, and I played around with the LOOP switch in the back (which changes power of loop) and then it burst into full sound. It must be a short. Try playing around with all the switches.

Thanks, I just tried messing around with all the switches and also tried going directly into the power amp in plugin and unfortunately it still has the low volume....and weird garbled tone.

Thanks,
Derek

...just out of curiosity...is the '94 Twin what is referred to as the "Evil Twin"?

This is the exact model as mine

I have the same amp with a similar problem. My guy cleaned out all the pots and resoldered a boatload of connections. Actually he may have done all of them. He kept it for another 4 weeks... Anyway, after I got it back, it was nectar. Hope that helps. (Was there a 94 Twin without reverb?) my amp doesnt say "Twin Reverb" but it has a reverb tank (as well as a 2nd clean channel and a crunch channel. Is that what you meant?

That's because it is NOT a Twin Reverb, it is a Twin. I'm not sure why people have trouble with this. :?

There are Twins, and there are Twin Reverbs. There are Deluxes and there are Deluxe Reverbs. There are Princetons and there are Princeton Reverbs. Get it?
