I’m looking for an amp with a lovely clean tone, primarily for use at home, as I have a 100W Twin Reverb for gigging, and which I keep at the studio because it’s too heavy to carry back and forth. I tried out the Hot Rod at my guitar store today and preferred it over the other Fender amps they had. However, I had gone to the store in the hope of playing the 65 Deluxe Reverb, which they do not have in stock. My question is...which do people prefer, if you were going to go for one of these? The Deluxe Reverb is £300 more expensive than the Hot Rod, but this doesn’t put me off. I’d be a little worried about shelling out money for an amp I hadn’t tried in person, though. I do expect that the Deluxe Reverb also has a tone to match that of the Hot Rod, but is it superior in other respects?

I play a Standard American Fender Strat.

Two completely different animals. 6V6 vs 6L6, so the tone is very different IMO.

Which is better, depends on what you're looking for in an amp... the HRD III is a loud amp and will have more clean headroom, but since this is for home use then the DRRI is probably a better choice.

The Hot Rod series had issues in the past, but it seems that Fender addressed some of these issues with the new III amps. I played through a couple of the new amps and they do sound good... but that sweet 6V6 tone still gets my vote. It's great at home and does a great job in most bars. Don't let the 22 Watts fool you, it's plenty loud, but it's more manageable to play at home.

Play both, side by side if possible, before making a decision.

+1 on the last sentence.

+1 on the first sentence as well!

I wonder if the 65 Princeton Reverb RI would be a nice choice here as well, given that you want a nice clean tone at home, it gives you that lovely Fender warm and Clean tone in an even smaller package than the DRRI, yet in the home environment it sounds like a MUCH bigger amp than it's actual physical size suggests.

HRD vs DRRI? Do we even need to have this discussion?

The DRRI is $300 more because it's that much better. Not just tone, but quality too. Where's 63Supro when you need him?

Hi all,

I did consider the Princeton too, which I like because of its small size, but the guitarist in my band has one of these already and I'd like to get something different for that sole reason. And while playing it in the store, I still preferred the DRRI.

Based on what everyone has said and on my own research, I think the DRRI is the one for me. Which leads me onto yet another question...Fender reissued the DRRI in a wine colour and changed the speaker, earlier this year, calling it the FSR Model. Fender's advertising blurb says

Quote:
"We've fitted it with a Jensen® P-12Q speaker, which includes the vintage-style "bell" cover over an alnico magnet.
This speaker, borrowed from our tweed '57 Deluxe™, has a warm crunchy tone that's easily overdriven for classic blues and rock 'n' roll styles."

I don't think the FSR model will give me the sound that I want, having listened to it online, although it looks really cool. What does everyone think?

The P12Q is a more appropriate speaker for this amp.

Why would anyone need a 100-watt C12K in a DRRI anyway?

I prefer a tube rectifier, and the Deluxe has that. It also has a 12 inch speaker that will give you a bit better response on the low end. I just bought mine from Guitar Center about 5 hours ago. It actually puts me in mind of being sort of a shrunk down twin reverb with one 12 in it. That is my take on the sound it produces. Great reverb sound and very good tremolo. Crisp highs to booming lows, and I do that with a 2006 American Deluxe Stratocaster. AND ... it looks good on stage.

It is not as heavy as the Twin Reverb, so running out the door to go to a jam or a gig is less back breaking. I had intended on trying out the Princeton, but in the back of my mind I had already decided on the Deluxe. Besides, GC was out of Princetons ... LOL

My new Deluxe replaces a Marshall JCM601. The deluxe will be with me till I pass on .... and I will try to take my rig with me LOL

Another plus is that my Line6 POD X3 Live has a '64 Blackface Deluxe emulated in it, so when I record I can reproduce that same sound on stage.

Now all I need is a room full of 18 year old bikini models without the bikinis on ... LOL

Congratulations, Wally!

There are only two kinds of guitarists......

Those who own a DRRI and those who are gonna buy one.

That assertion demands supporting visual evidence.

  So true. I wouldn't worry about wattage difference either. 40 watts is quite a bit of power. You might gain a little more headroom but the DRRI cuts better. The way I look at it anymore, If 20 or 30 watts isn't enough, it's time to look for a new band. Seriously, the tone of the DRRI and the ability to cut a mix better puts you way ahead of the game. It 's a better sounding amp and with two channels with separate EQ, it a way more versatile amp. Your also paying more because it's built like a professional piece of equipment not landfill.
