My amp has some minor snap, crackle, pop. I have replaced 3 preamp tubes so far. I guess I should replace the rest also. My amp had a bad preamp tube when I got it home, I just didn't know it at the time. Anyway, I was thinking of replacing the tranny. I've been to Mercury Magnetic's website (can I say that in here?) and they claim major tone improvements by installing thier transformers and chokes. Anyone with experience in this? I want the best tone possible!!

I have a DRRI and have been modding it lately.I've replaced the speaker(Eminence GB12),tubes(JJ's,GZ34 rec.,6V6S output,12AT7 in V3 +V6,12AX7's V1,2,4+5),Merc Magnetic trannies all 4,and now I'm experimenting with different resistor and cap vaues. My amp now sounds incredible, much better than when it was stock.
The MM trannies are offer a serious tonal improvement.
You really need to replace all the tubes that came in the amp.Fender uses the cheapest they can buy. They also cut costs with cheap trannies.I would have to say at a minimum, change the tubes, the output tranny, and the choke. Then rebias the new power tubes.
JMI Music in Fort Worth,Tx. has your component needs in stock, and at fair(good)prices. And Jim is a real nice and helpful guy.Excellent customer service. When I order from him,It's at my house the next day.
Good luck,Aubrey

Hi,

Interesting topic. I have a fender twin purchased less than a year ago, and the other day it started sounding like crap, esp. on the distortion chanel. I have an idea that it is the tubes. When I take it to a service center, can I ask them to replace the tubes with better quality tubes, and what should I ask them exactly? I'm a player, not a tech, so any information would be most appreciated. Also, you talked about a replacing the tranny. Could you explain what that is exactly?

I certainly would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I will order me a complete new set of tubes ASAP. I will have to get a tech to rebias the amp if I replace the output tubes though. I don't know how to. I know the transformers are high dollar items. Is it worth the money to replace them? Is the tone difference that good? If it is, I will certainly replace them all.

I think that it was worth the money. When I am done I will have a new amp that sounds better than most all of the vintage Fenders. To get a boutique amp with reverb and vibrato you would have to spend quite a bit more than I will have invested.Keep in mind that I am doing all the work myself. If I had to pay someone for the labor I would be able to buy one of those type of boutique amps for what I am out.I am going to end up with the amp that I want(because I am going to make it sound the way I want)for about $1200.All the components that I am using is the same or at least of the same caliber as what the major highend amp designers are using.Mine will still be on a printed circuit board, but that actually has advantages over point to point wiring.
Rebiasing the tubes is not that difficult and if you are going to be a tube amp owner you should learn how to do it.Also learn why it needs to be done.Do some research on the subject,it gets really interesting.Go to the Eurotubes website. There is a video that you can watch that shows you what you actually do,although it doesn't teach you why you need to.
When you order the tubes, make sure to get a matched pair of output tubes.Good tubes are going to make quite a difference by themselves.
Good luck!

If you are going to replace the tubes, demand better tubes.Even if your amp is still under warranty, the tubes will not be covered,so your'e going to have to pay for them.Get what you want.If your not sure about what tubes you want to buy,I would suggest JJ's.
Trannies = transformers.Good transformers make a world of difference in your tone.
Hope this helps.
