I wonder about the OP. Poor kandros and his simple speaker questions.

Hey Arjay, you gotta love the old Sunn amps. I had a Sunn Scepter around 73 or 74 and that was 60 watts of bone rattling goodness. Some of the tastiest tones I ever had came from that amp and its overly built 4x12 speaker cabinet. It's a real shame it went the way it did. I believe Fender owned them for a while before they disappeared. And no the reissue Model T wasn't the same as the original and was horrible. The original was the only amp who's power actually scared me. I plugged into an original one at an outdoor gig running two cabs. Yow!!!

Do you still have any Sunn amps?

I too had a Sunn Sceptre "back in the day"......

Image

Shown here with the first two speaker cabs I ever built (1 x 15 bass-reflex design with an EV-SRO in each). The Fender side of the house at the time included the Leslie 18 (aka "Vibratone") shown atop the 4 x 12 Bassman cab.

Those old Sunns sounded HUGE!

Yer an instigator, Arjay!

No, I'm all done... That's more than enough rampant stupidity and neurosis for one month.

Interestingly, to my knowledge I believe that this is the first time I ever posted something on a forum, and at first I was a little blown away by where this thing went.

I remember the first time I read Jim's post - on the first time through it I felt like he came on a little strong, and I felt a little dumb for even considering a BJ. Then I read it again, and I remembered an e-mail that I once sent where I did not mean to infer a tone, and the recipient felt like I was yelling at them. I think that Jim honestly believes in his music and is passionate about what Egnater is doing. So, after nosing around the web a bit about Egnater, I realized that he is definitely on to something. I played one, and it went home with me. Since then, I think my playing has improved significantly because for the first time I actually like the sound of my own music, and I play longer and more often. I now understand the whole tube amp thing. I like the fact that the Tweaker is not a one trick pony and I can make it sound great with a clean sound as well as a slightly distorted sound.

Thanks Jim, because of you, I am now a believer. You deserve a commission.

Very cool! Jim got me hooked on Egnater about two years ago. Thinking outside the ordinary can be a great thing. My Rebel 20 did the same thing for me. I almost forgot how much a piece of gear can inspire you. When I gig, I get nothing but huge compliments on how my rig sounds, and people that I've known for many years can hear a new creative spark of inspiration in my playing. I'll try any piece of gear that someone is really passionate about. Sometimes I like the new suggestions sometimes I don't. Some people perceive other peoples passion as negative comments on their gear. I don't. Even if it is flat out negative, I still don't care. Egnater may not be everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, all I know is because of Egnater, I'm inspired to play and once I flip that power switch on, it's on for hours not minutes. My old HRDlx didn't do that for me even when it was new. I only used it when I had to use it. My little Pignose and SF Champ amp saw way more use.
At least I know I finally can get the tone in my head and hundreds of variations of that tone and not sound like every other person around the local music scene and that speaks volumes.

Sweet! I wish I still had mine. My testicles did thank me though.

+1

I never did have any "real" Sunn cabs but my bass-player brother did. He still has several 200S enclosures that he runs with his Coliseum stack. Plus all those Acoustic 370's......OUCH!

They all equally bland, uninteresting amplifiers. Too bad you've already talked yourself into one...those countless positive reviews are the result of the internet echo chamber.

I talked myself into buying one without playing one extensively first, based on oceans of praise on the Web, and it was a mistake. Before you buy one, go play through some and compare them to other 15 watt choices. I'd recommend trying an Egnater Tweaker Combo, for example.

But honestly, don't talk yourself into buying gear based on what "everybody" says on the web, and don't ever take the word of a guitar magazine's review, especially not when the maker is a major advertiser.

That's funny. I'd never heard of the Blues Jr before I plugged into one at GC about 8 years ago to try out some guitars. The amazing tones from the amp sold me on it. It's my #1 gigging amp, and the tone evokes fond memories of a Fender 5E3 Deluxe I once owned. Of course, YMMV. But to my ear it's one of Fender's best current products.
