I love my Blues Jr III. I really enjoy how it sounds. I tried a bunch of other amps including the Egnater Tweaker, and a bunch of Vox stuff, and the Blues Jr stood out to me.

The only other amp that I loved in its class was the Blackheart Handsome Devil. It was more open sounding and was really easy to get a good dirty sound out of, but the cleans weren't as great and there was no reverb.

I am personally surprised at how many people love the Blues Jr, it seems more like a niche sound to me, but it is the niche sound that I am looking for.

btw... I am usually trying to play swampy blues, gritty blues or some classic rock stuff with an OCD pedal for the rock stuff.

Nah, EgFrier was the one who got me to try the Egnater in the first place LOL. Egnater does a good job all by itself. The only thing I knew about Egnater at the time was he used to make really cool boutique amps that I couldn't afford.

OK, so it looks like things got interesting here while I was out today.

Typically when I make a purchase, I try to find out as much info as I can. In this case, it seems that my local guitar shop only carries the basic black Blues Jr, or a relic model. (I can't wrap my head around the concept of buying a relic) I have tried the basic model, but it seems that currently the tweed or the other brown model are special for the big stores, and I have not been able to find one within a reasonable drive. That is why I was asking about the differences in the models and speakers rather than just go play one.

I am a total amateur, and as such, I am always learning and I am not always aware of all of the options out there. I will say that the Egnater has piqued my interest, and I spent a good part of my work day looking at them on the web. I will say this- I WILL play one of these before I decide on making a purchase.

this begs another question: in this price range, what other options should I consider for a tube amp?
I would check out the Vox AC 15.Not a bad amp for 599.

You could give the Peavey Classic 30 / Delta Blues a look. I have the former. The latter I think has different speaker options, plus tremolo, and is about $50 more expensive. Mine's seen a lot of gigs and practices in the last 2.5 years, no issues so far. Worth trying, anyway.

You can get the Delta Blues with either two 10" or one 15" speakers. The Delta Blues with the 15 that I use from time to time is pretty nice. The stock speaker is okay but I think a different speaker would really open it up. Great amps and reliable too.

That's the general consensus - sounds good as-is, sounds great with a speaker swap. I like the sound, and thus can't be bothered to do a speaker swap, though I've thought about it from time to time, if only because a few people I know have done it and liked the resultant sound (Weber Blue Dog seems to be a popular choice).

Hard to go wrong with a Weber speaker.

The Vox is a good call. I didn't get on with the one Classic 30 I evaluated, but some players I respect really like them.

Likewise. The Rebel, through the aforementioned Red Fang, is (to quote C. Berry) just like-a ringin' a bell.

Yesterday I made a trek to NJ to a GC that had both the tweed BJ as well as the Egnater Tweeker combo.

I played an American Tele on both and began to draw my own conclusions, but I decided to give the store staff a try to see what they had to say. When I got the right guy, he was very knowledgable on both amps, and even stated that he played a BJ. After a lengthy explanation of both, it seemed obvious that he too felt that the BJ was a good amp, but a bit limited compared to the Tweeker. I believe the term he used was "one trick pony".

Needless to say, I bought the Tweeker, and 24 hours later, I can honestly say that this thing is amazing!

Dang another one? Welcome to the "Brotherhood of the Egnater". Great amps. Man, there's getting to be a big bunch of us now.

I've got the tweed one now, and I've had a black/silver one before. The tweed NOS has a better sound for a strat than the old black version to my ears. I haven't tried a Blues Jr. III. Look at the videos done on youtube with the Blues Jr. There are many very nice examples of how good a Blues Jr. can sound.

I should have paid better attention to this thread. Looks like I missed all the juicy strife and infighting and stuff. I thought it was kind of interesting to see my post about being fully qualified to comment being used to accuse EgFryer of ... wahtever. I guess I also need to pay better attention to who is doing some of the posting here too. I never saw that side of shimmi before. Anyway shimmi, and anybody else who is interested, this is why I am qualified to comment:
