Having a problem trying to find the correct ohmage for an external speaker to use with a Deluxe Reverb amp (onboard single 12" Fender, design by Eminence, 8 ohms). The outputs (from the factory) are wired in parallel.

Any suggestions. I'd like to use a 15" external speaker (either open- or closed-back cabinet) placed over by my keyboard player so he can hear what's going on.

Thanks.

Hi doremi,

Any 8 ohm or 16 ohm external speaker impedance will work fine. With an 8 ohm external speaker and the 8 ohm internal speaker, you will have a 4 ohm total load. With a 16 ohm external speaker and the 8 ohm internal speaker, you will have a 5.3 ohm total load. You could even use a 4 ohm or 2 ohm external speaker, but the output might be much different sounding, unpleasant and low output. You can run the amp with the output shorted and it still will not harm the amp in any way (think protective shorting jack that is installed on your amp, and many other amps).

Any tube amp can safely and easily handle an impedance mismatch of 2 to 1, it will just simply not get it's full rated output power with more or less than rated speaker impedance load (in this case 8 ohms rated).

The confusion is understandable, especially with the different instructions for impedance matching on the amps and in the manuals. If you have any doubt about this, contact Fender and they will tell you the same thing, an impedance mismatch of 2 to 1 is perfectly fine.

I am dubious about that.

I never liked how the DRRI sounded with two 8 ohms speakers, both speakers sounded too weak... I think the best way would be to run two 16 ohms speakers in parallel for a total of 8 ohms, but when you run the internal speaker alone it'll be at 16 ohms, something to think about, you'd have to put the 8 ohms back in.

I didn't bother spending money on two additional 16 ohms speakers, but you're welcome to give it a try and report back

Local call for you? Would only take a few minutes to verify.

Worth neither my dime nor my time -- I already know what I'm doing.
