In some 45 years, I don't think I've ever "disassembled" a tranny. You measure the primary, you measure the secondary(s) -- if shorted or open you remove it, heave it, and replace it. I might dissect a defective one after the fact just to satisfy my curiosity but my primary concern is always to return the piece of gear to serviceability with all due alacrity.

I don't even like to touch, or look directly at, a trans for fear of causing a buzzing noise.

Like you said, a meter will almost always tell all. Sometimes, just too loose or too tight screws can cause vibrational noise in some trans. Even crooked/strained mounting can cause some hum.

.......New tubes and re-biased to 70mV and then all the way down to 40mV......
Even tried different tubes....

Don't know what else it could be... Any suggestions??

new tubes, obviously u changed preamp tubes too? ALL of them?
you prob did.
I had a few tube amps doing the same thing, so far, turns out it is a preamp tube.
power amp tubes always give me a low hum sound almost like someone is outside mowing the grass. bad PREAMP tubes give me a crackling, sizzling, paper crush sound.

Art1,
in '60 or '70 bench test meter was a tubes voltmeter , a VTVM, not a Simpson for the same raison I wrote ; too low impedance for the Simpson and all of these VOM
I have one of those VTVM, a Heatkit I built.

Getting older and more brain farts. VTVM is what I was referring to. It just depended on the equipment. Used the Simpson primarily for resistors and caps. (out of the circuit.) VTVM was my friend as long as I had AC handy to plug into. something I preferred not to carry around though. Might have been RCA but Navy and Coast Guard were really big on HP test equipment. I think most meters were Simpson and RCA, most O'scopes were tektronix with at least one HP per station. Nearly everything else, Freq Counters, Cesium Beam Oscillators, etc were all HP. Which was nice because they all looked the same in the rack.

I don't want you to get mad, sorry .
I'm french speaking and my choice of words are very limited and it is difficult to me to write other word than black or white. And writing is so long to explain something, It is not if we where together with a coffe or beer.

One other tiny reminder... Using a WOODEN chopstick to tap components, often narrows down the cuplrit(s). Whether it a bad cap, resistor, or solder point. Amp will need to be turned on. Speakers connected. Low volume. No INPUT (nothing plugged in).

WOODEN only and keep free hand OFF the chassis, when doing this. HV lurking below.

Sorry to be repetetive. Check Page 1 of this thread for my other wonderful pearls of wisdom!

Photo for Arjay. Since it's been so hot, a nice cold beer would hit the spot. I always like the semi-dark St Pauli's Girls over their Pils.

BMW2002ti- NICE PIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Twirly- Yes all tubes were replaced. Then again with tubes that are known not to make this type of noise, and still made noise.

The copstick methon did nothing for me in trying to figure what the heck is wrong eith amp though i think it is an awesomr approach.

In looking and working with this amp i just want to replace the three circuitboards and call it a day. Is there somewhere we can purchase the boards?

:!: :!: :!:

It'd be cheaper to just unscrew the pilot-lamp jewel, lift it off, slide a brand-new amp beneath it, then re-install the lens.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Wait a minuite, I thought that new amps come with pilot-lamp jewels?? Or is that a new option?? (sarcasm)

Man this amp has seen better days but thats another reason that I personally use the older vintage stuff. As this solid state tube stuff is almost as complex as new cars. This amp was given to me from a buddy of mine asking if i could help him in getting it fixed. I guess im going to have to tell him that its not going to happen......

I have "vintage" stuff.

Rebelsoul has "vintage" stuff.

T2Stratman has "vintage" stuff.

Cedarblues has "vintage" stuff.

None of us would ever consider any HR amp (regardless of age) as "vintage" stuff.

I agree with thr HR stuff never being part of the "VINTAGE" clan of items. I have a few of great stuff mysself.
69 Deluxe Reverb
2 x 70 Bandmaster Reverbs with the full sized 12" speaker cabinets
and though its a reissue i just picked up a 59 Bassman reissue.. LOVE IT!!!!

This solid state stuff is not vintage at all in my eyes...
