hello all, I recently picked up a used hot rod deville 2x12 for what I thought was a great price. However...reverb is not working, the lamp/jewel light is dead. Everything else is working fine though.

Could this just be a tube problem? I ordered a fresh set of jj's 12ax7 and 6l6gc as I planned on rebiasing and re-tubing anyway.
Could this be something worse?

Thanks in advance!

The pilot lamp is an easy fix. Unscrew the jewel, carefully push down on the bulb while simultaneously rotating it until the bayonet lugs at its base disengage from the socket, then replace the bulb with a new type 47 by reversing the procedure.

The dead reverb could be anything from a bad tank, loose or bad cable(s), or wonky op-amps within the chassis. If the channel-select function is operating correctly then the switching relays and diodes are likely okay. New tubes will not correct the reverb problem -- I'm betting that the tank is shot.

Get acclimated to problems with this amp -- it sounds like the honeymoon is long over.

+ 1 Retroverbial
Try to clean input / output connectors with rotating the RCA plug ( from your wire) Many chances are bad contact . Clean also the reverb tank connector same way.

A contact cleaner will help but only with rotating and plug / unplug this will help.

Thanks for the responses!

Ok, picked up a #47 bayonet lamp @ radio shack. The jewel now lights up!
The reverb, unfortunately is shot. I ordered a new tank.
I plan on fixing everything up and selling/trading the amp.
Pretty disappointed actually, as I really wanted this to be my reliable workhorse.
The more I read, it seems the hot rod series is really problematic. Oh well..
Thanks again!

Read my post on the Hot Rod Deluxe.. I had the same problem.. If your somewhat savvy with a multimeter you can check resistance on both sides. One should read 60ohms an the other should be around 230ohms. If wither values are 0ohms then your problem is that the tiny copper coiled wires where the plug attaches to are open and not making contact. I held the one I was working on in the sunlight and saw it was not connected and unwound it by one turn. This ave me enough slack on the small copper wire to re-solder it back to the post.. I checked it withthe multimeter and found 230ohms, where it was at 0ohms before I did this, and saved myself the hassle of ordering a new one.. Good luck!!

The Dvl seems to get lumped in with the DLx in the HRd series for some strange reason, and it shouldn't, as the Dvl has NONE of the power supply issues that the Dlx has. The Dvl is the least troublesome of all the HRd series, and is as reliable as any newly manufactured amp, only requiring attention in the area of solder joints typically, if any problems at all. Your problems are definitely not typical with the Dvl.
