So tomorrow i'll have the oppertunity to try a Super Reverb, a Twin Reverb and a Deluxe Reverb in band rehearsal.

I believe in the John Mayer philosophy (yeah he might be a bit of a douche but he knows his gear), which means that you basically need a strat with low output pups, an amp with an incredible clean and endless headroom, and get your drive/distortion from pedals.

In my band i play mostly blues stuff (SRV, BB King, Tommy Castro) which actually requires an amp who will actually break at some point. I did have a DRRI to play on but i found the breakup to harsh and aggressive, but that may also be that particular amp and not the DRRI in general.

We're with 4 guys, bass, drums, singer and myself

so what do you think i'll end up buying?

Aw, play them all and buy the one that delivers the best mojo for the money. If you can live without reverb and trem you might also give the re-issue 5F6-A a try as well......those Bassman LTD's have a real nice vibe and work well with most stompboxes.

Best of luck

Depends on your age...
The older you are, the lighter amp you'll buy.

Oh, I'd go for the TRRI, but that's just me!

DRRI: sweet 6V6 tone with early breakup, light but still loud enough for most gigs.

SRRI: heavier and bigger, very sweet breakup, more clean headroom and louder, mean sounding low end, think SRV.

TRRI: the cleanest of all, loudest and heaviest, still a great sounding amp.

I'd say go with the SRRI or a vintage SR if you can find one in your area for about the same price, plenty out there... I say SR cause you're looking for some breakup and you want that SRV tone.

Seems like a week never goes by that I don't see a silverface SR available for $900-$1200......easily affordable for someone contemplating a new SRRI purchase. The vintage amp may require some repair and/or cosmetic reconditioning but these amps hold their value (or even appreciate in some cases) while the re-issues crash and burn the moment one departs the store with one. And the re-issues are less "tuneable" when compared to the PTP-wired originals.

if you want loads of clean headroom and distortion from pedals go with the twin reverb

+10...I picked up a completely original '72 Silverface Super Reverb in excellent condition for only $800 that had a cap job and recent retubed. Hard to beat the reverb that comes with this amp too!

FWIW

I looked at the same trio with similar goals in mind and ended up SRRI. I just love the open sound of the 4x10 cab. I do find the natural breakup to be a bit harsh though with the stock Jensens. I use an Analogman Silver-modded Tube Screamer in front of it with a high level and just a touch of drive and that seems to help tame it. I'm not sure I can explain why, but it works.

So last night i had a change to try the TRRI and the DRRI side to side. My findings:

TRRI: untill volume is around 4 it sounds good but not there yet. just over 4 it really starts to pick up on volume and tone and basically sounds amazing. Problem is that around 5 it literally hurts your ears (my right ear still feels crappy lol). So yeah it sounds amazing but simply not useful outside really big outdoor gigs.

Clean tone: 10 (big spread clean with lots of detail and definition, really brings out my strat tone beautifully)
Driven tone: na (i didn't dare to go beyond 6 lol)
eating pedals: 9 (you purely hear the effect of the pedal, the amp itself doesn't break a sweat)
usability: 4 (just too loud. The range where you can work within is simply too small)

DRRI: whats notable is the smooth volume increase when turning the volume knob. I've seen DRRI who are very twitchy with that. It sounds a lot more smooth than other DRRI i've heard. Seems like this one gains a lot less in the preamp department, making it al lot more useful on lower volume. Around 4 it's nice and clean and at a good rehearsal/small gig/big gig with pa volume. But around 5, something happens i've never heard other DRRI do before. Smooth lucious power tube breakup, just lovely. This is why you play a tube amp. This goes even further when you add some tubescreamer with not much drive but with some level. It sounds a bit like this in the intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZHnVvy_Hxg . Going beyond that point is pointless because you really don't need more volume, and the preamps start to distort more which i don't really like. I do have the feeling you just have so much to work with in this amp, finding little nuances in sound.

Clean tone: 8 (typical fender clean, needed to back down on the reverb and give it some more bass to make it sound a bit bigger and tight. Question is if the volume is high enough when clean to still be present in a band...this i can test tonight)
Driven tone: 10 (i've yet to hear this in a DRRI since most get really bright and harsh, and i simply love it, i'll have to change the way i work with drive sounds though)
eating pedals: 8 (you'll have to search a bit more but the fender clean is a great starting point, also i think once you really get to know this amp you'll learn how to get best out of amp and pedal )
usability: 8 (looking at the band i'm in now, and the wish to home record, this one seems to be the best alrounder, the question is...will the clean headroom be enough for in a band, if so this would be a 10)

So tonight i'll be throwing the SRRI in the mix, and probably leave the TRRI at home, i mean it simply sounds awesome but i need my hearing lol.

The points for SRRI will be:

1. How is the volume increase when playing the volume knob
2. How does the clean compare to the DRRI
3. Will it break up like the DRRI and at what volume will it do so.

The point for DRRI will be:

1. is the clean headroom enough for in the band.

Basically the SRRI needs to be as usable as the DRRI plus some really convincing in both clean and break up department, if it wants to stand a chance.

I'll keep you posted...if you have some predictions, they are VERY welcome! :)

PS. doing this DOES give you nice pictures (excuse me for the poor quality):

This post is cool. 8) 8)

Waiting for the results.
I think it might depend on how much you run around the stage or if you usually play quite close to the amp. I have heard that DRRIs sound better on the floor than a stand?
(Perhaps somebody should create a DRRI backpack!)

Ps - My prediction is DRRI.
