Hi All,
I am now the proud owner of a brand new Hot Rod Deluxe III and so far I am impressed, the sound of this beast is phenomenal. I've just got a wee question about the effects loop, here's what I use:
Fender Jaguar HH Mexican (with Humbuckers) and a Fender Tele (made up of US parts, built by myself) with Kinman Noiseless pickups.
Boss gx700 with a Behringer midi controller
Cry Baby wah

I only use chorus, delay and sometimes a wee bit of vibrato on the gx700 and will be using the drive from the amp (dont like too much drive)
Will the gx700 work in the effects loop? I assume I just run a cable from the output (left Mono) to the Pre-amp in and then a cable from the front input to the pre amp out?
Has anyone used the gx700 in the effects loop and how does it sound.
I will use the cry baby as normal (between the guitar and amp)
I like the idea of the having my time effects sitting in between pre & power amp.
Any help or advice would be greatfully appreciated guys
Tom

Don't you mean "run a cable from the output (left Mono) to the power amp in"?

:?:

Beat me to it Retroverbial, but here's mine anyway.

Hi tomb65,

Congratulations on the new amp. I also own a HRDlx and it is a great amp. You are correct, time-based effects usually do well in the loop. For the loop, the "Preamp Out" is an output, and the "Power Amp In" is the input.

Yes, I've never used an effects loop in an amp so just experimenting, ok, let me get this right.
Output (left Mono) to Power amp in
front input of gx700 to preamp out
is that correct?
Many thanks
Tom

Distortion pedals usually don't work very well in the loop. Time based effects work well though.
For me anyway, the loop is more trouble than it's worth. With tube amps, when your distortion pedal is plugged straight into amp, it will push the amp harder and that's where all the nice distortion comes from. Won't happen in the loop so you lose a bit. I don't use effect processors, just stomp boxes most of which I build myself. Processors scare me. I guess it's a tradeoff when using the loop.

I dont use the distortion on the processor, I normally use a boss Distortion/Feedbacker, but was hoping to use the drive from the amp just for that crunch sound I find distortion pedals sound a bit manufactured, I was hoping to do away with the dist pedal and have Delay, chorus and some vibrato (for a couple of songs) in the loop and crunch from the amp.
It will just be a setting on the gx I do have eq set on the gx though so that maybe causing the drive drop.
I'll just experiment while the wife's out (cant turn it up past 1.5 when she's in) :-)
Thanks guys
T

I'm pretty old school. Too many options and settings tempt me to play with the dials too much and eventually send me on another tone quest.
I has an older HRDlx and the drive channels were horrible IMO. Just me though. The III was supposed to be better, but the one I tried didn't seem all that much different.

+1!

Too many of those multi-EFX all-in-one mega-pedals remind me of a 747's cockpit.

I deep-sixed mine years ago and went back to a small-but-tasty selection of individual vintage stompboxes.

Yeah think ill do the same, would need a chorus, digital delay and vibrato, which ones would you recommend, I think the feedbacker pedal is ok, just tried it and took the drive on it way down and mixed it with the drive on the amp and sounded pretty good
Cheers guys
Tom

Tom, I build mine from BYOC.
http://www.buildyourownclone.com/ Pretty cool sounding stuff.
They're coming out with a new Amp Selector & Stereo FX Router - two transformer isolated outputs to select between two different amps. Or plug a second input into the stereo input to use it as a dedicated isolation box for a true stereo rig.

They're also coming out with a Mutron Octave Divider clone. I had some original Mutron stuff, The original Mutron III and the Octave Divider. I sold the pair on EBay for almost a grand when I was having some slow times with my business. I really regret doing that.
