I build most of my own pedals using circuit boards from general guitar gadgets. I was so amazed at the simplicity of building fuzzes, OD's, Distortions and so forth that I decided to save a ton of money and do this myself. Plus you can fully customized or "mod" some of the classic designs to suit your own personal tastes. For ex. A TS808 with mods goes for a substantial sum. Mine that I built with the same or very similar mods cost me about $30-35 or so to build per... so far I've built 2 TS's. They sound just as good to me. If you like fuzzes, they are so incredibly simple to build. You can tweak cap and resistor values and can get an amazing sounding pedal for a little more than the cost of a soldering iron. I've also built compressors, phasers, and have a few in the works. If you want a new favorite pedal... go and build one. You'll impress yourself.

My pedal board is constantly evolving and devolving if that makes any sense. I go from using 4 to 5 pedals to 1 or none at all. My favorite compressor is the EH Soul Preacher. For OD's I use a Westchester Music modded Tube Screamer (with the famed JRC4558 chip whoooooo! Don't know if that chip is the reason the pedal sounds good or not) a Keeley Phat mod Blues Driver (which I really like), a Boss Super Overdrive SD-1 (for my Dead covers), and a Fulltone Robin Trower OD that is very nice. I have a Boss Fuzz and a Russian Big Muff that I dig but hardly use. I do recommend always having a good delay pedal on hand as they can be used for a multitude of purposes and I own and am very happy with the MXR Carbon Copy Delay. I always have it on if I am using pedals with at least a little bit of slap back but that pedal can go Gilmour trippy delay city if neccessary. I also have an Alembic Strat-o-blaster installed in my '98 Strat which is basically a clean boost that can be activated directly from the guitar. Its is very useful for leads and solos but probably overpriced if you're not a Dead or Garcia fan as you can find plenty of build your own stratoblasters or boosters that cost half the price. Anyway pedals are great fun and can inspire your playing if you're stuck in a rut or they can steal your money and leave you pissed if you're unhappy with what you purchaced. Just try 'em out and enjoy the experience.

I totally agree. Building a pedal is really cool, educational, and to be honest... a lot of fun!

I didn't go through General Guitar Gadgets though. I got my stuff from BYOC (Build Your Own Clone). They may be a little more expensive than GGG, but their kits come with absolutely everything you need, including the pre-drilled metal enclosure, and even a few spare parts as well! 8)

For people who have never built a pedal... It's okay... You can do it... Anyone can do it! Just go out to Radio Shack or wherever and buy a soldering iron and some solder. Go onto that BYOC website http://www.buildyourownclone.com and check out the kit called "Confidence Boost". It is a very small, very inexpensive, volume booster. It has only a few components, and teaches you step-by-step, how to build it and make it work.

Thats cool. I've been to the BYOC site many times. They have some awesome looking kits and are starting to make just the boards available. I'll be a customer for sure if their PCB section starts to grow. The instructions they have are the most clear, detailed and easy to follow of any of the other sites. But as you said, anyone can do it. Some of those fuzzes are so incredibly simply to put together... I've never been a fuzz guy until I built my first one... now I cant live without that sound. I totally dig all of those botique models as well (Analogman, Keeley, etc.) but my broke azz can fill out my board for the cost of one of those if I do it myself... and its fun and personally rewarding. BTW, I'm from Richmond,Va... Midlothian actually, but moved away about 2 1/2 years ago. I hope the quake and hurricane didnt do too much damage.

I have the same problem with the RC 3 and found this post while trying to troubleshoot it - the preprogrammed tracks are so loud, it's all or nothing when you put any signal on - minimum setting for sound on the outer ring brings the volume up many times then what your guitar can put out - I don't know how or why they did that, but we can't be the only two guys who have this problem - well, it's not that big a deal, because I didn't really buy it for the presets, but it just seems dumb - my set up is straightforward and this behavior shouldn't be amp specific....well, anyway, I'll $@!&* to Boss and see what they say.

I just tripped in here looking after a problem, but since it's 'favorite pedals and effects' and I am a pedal head, I guess I should at least list a few of my favorites. While I buy pedals from lots of places (in-store, Musician's Friend and similar, even Amazon.com) and have lots of different kinds, in general I have a fondness for Keeley originals and mods - I have his compressor sustain four knob, the upgraded TS-9, as well as the upgrade to my Boss MT-2....I like my Ultimate Octave fuzz/octave pedal by Fulltone, although I hardly use the octaver.

A long time ago, I bought the Ibanez Weeping Demon wah (thinking it would be great because it has more settings, so more flexibility, more fun, right? But ended up liking the Vox old school simple wah pedal better. I like my MXR carbon copy for the tone, but really wanted to repeat phrases endlessly (without spending over three hundred dollars), which put me recently into the Boss RC-3....I have a Pigtronix Tremvelope (bought it from Hello Music because Pigtronix makes good pedals and it was really cheap - I haven't tried it yet, but will....who knows, maybe I'll like it?

I'm a Rory Gallgher fan, and he sometimes used a treble booster - but the one he used is/was unavailable, so I bought an Analog man Beano-Boost, which is a nice pedal - does just what it's supposed to do....

A recent buy that is showing some fun potential - Electroharmonix Q-tron plus - funky to set, and has some zones of real unplayability, but it seems there are some other zones of really cool combinations of delays and wah sounds and etc - see demos on Youtube, which I watched and it made me want one - there are several variants, from a real inexpensive unit to the enchilada, and they all get good press.

I sometimes use my MXR Smart Gate at the end of my pedal chain, when I have four or five running, the noise can get high...I have a really old Digitech RP-100 which actually is a really fun and capable pedal.

I use a Korg D-10 in front of my chain. Almost all my pedals have true bypass - that has become almost a requirement for me. I power all the standard pedals with a daisy chain 9 volt cord which seems to greatly minimize noise - I try not to buy odd ball power pedals, but have at least two (the RP-100 and the Tremvelope)..

I run my pedals generally into the clean channel of my Mesa 5:50 and that usually works really well.

While often there are good combinations of two pedals, usually that's about all I'll have active at once, or maybe two with the Wah on top....you get too far from your guitar, and you're not playing guitar - yeah, that's right Edge or whatever your real name is, mate!

My family room floor is tough to walk in, but I'm happy.....

My favorite pedal is the POD HD500. I can use it direct to PA, or turn off the amp simulation and then I use it in front of my Vox AC-30 CCX. It's effects don't sound quite as nice as individual pedals IMHO, but it does just about everything and its super flexible and convenient.
