I posted earlier asking about everyone's favorite compressor. Folks were kind in sharing not only their favorite but also pictures of their pedal board. I figured why not expand it into everyone's favorite effects per category. I'll start with mine...

My guitar is a MIM Standard Sunburst Strat HSS with the humbucker upgraded to a DiMarzio PAF Pro. At some point I would like to get a matching Standard Tele or a Thinline Tele.

Fender Blues Junior III (by end of next week).

Pedals/Effects:
I use a Bone powered pedal board.

Boss Tu-2 Tuner

Boss DS-1 Distortion. Picked this pedal up for under 30 bucks and was knocked out by the tone.

Dunlop Cry-Baby Wah

Visual Audio Liquid Chorus = Blown away when I heard it and found it on E-bay like new for half the price.

I still need a compressor/sustainer, lookin at Keeley, Wampler, and EHX Soul Preacher.

I may get the Boss FDR-1 for the tremolo and reverb since the BJIII reverb can be a little harsh.

I don't really use a Phaser, Flanger, Whammy, or delay, but may go with a delay later. I may upgrade the DS-1 to either a Fulltone OCD or a Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret Mk II if I can find either at the right price.

Look forward to hearing what everyone else uses.

My setup is pretty simple. I have a C30, but no footswitch, so when I want to go from clean to dirty, I'll either play on the dirt channel with the volume rolled back (so that volume controls dirt), or I'll use a Boss Blues Driver, which is a pretty decent OD.

The only other pedal I have that gets regular use is a Big Muff Pi. It's the great equalizer - makes all my guitars sound the same! I have some others pedals (delay, chorus, wah), but they barely see the light of day.

Finally, I have a Pod 2.0 which I use for practicing with headphones. Sounds great and is very versatile.

This is an older picture, before I got the EH Cathedral and Boss RC3..

Image

My current studio effects chain in the order on my pedal board is:

Beri CS400 Comp/Sustainer -> EH Soul Preacher -> Beri EQ700 -> Digitech Bad Monkey Tube Over Drive -> Big Muff with Tone Wicker -> Digitech Screamin Blues -> Beri EQ700 -> EH Worm for Vibrato -> 1990's EH Small Stone Phaser -> EH Deluxe Electric Mistress -> Danelectro Cool Cat Stereo Chorus -> Boss Stereo Volume Pedal -> EH Stereo Memory Man with Hazaria -> EH Cathedral Stereo Reverb -> Boss RC3 Stereo Looper -> Left Channel to the BDRI and the Right channel to a Blues Junior

I will probably switch the Beri CS400 for a Digitech's Main Squeeze and the Beri EQ700's for MXR M108 10 band eq's.

The EH Soul Preacher is a nice compressor/sustainer after I turned the trim pot down inside of it to make it less noisy. It gives a nice thick tone and overdrives the Bad Monkey, Big Muff and Screamin Blues just right. The Digitech Pedals have turned out to be hidden jewels that are really affordable.

The 1990's era EH Small Stone has a large volume drop, so I have to crank up the volume any time I use it, but most of the time I just use it for a backing rhythm loop.

The Boss RC3 is great hooked up to the amps if I am just doing live loops, but the included loops and the loops I drag into it are so loud I cannot use them in my practice room, without getting frowns from my other half. So for now if I am using the pre-recorded loops I have them connected with a Y connecter and send the signal over to my PA, so I can adjust the volume better.

I usually only use the overdrive pedals for practicing at low volumes and both amps on around four. With the EH Soul Preacher and the Bad Monkey over driving the Big Muff or over driving the Screamin Blues and turning down the volume on the guitar, really gives it some thick tone at low levels.

For live situations I just crank up the amps and mostly just use the two compressors and the Bad Monkey, EH Big Muff and Screamin Blues in single mode, depending on which flavor of dirt I want.

For Gilmour and Trower stuff, the Beri CS400, Soul Preacher, Beri EQ700 set for mids, Big Muff, Electric Mistress, Cool Cat Chorus, Stereo Memory Man and the Cathedral all switched on make that flavor well.

For Santana, Bonamassa fuzz stuff, the Beri CS400, Soul Preacher, Beri EQ700 set for mids, Big Muff, Cool Cat Chorus, and the Cathedral with a small reverb setting, all switched on make that flavor.

For clean blues, the Beri CS400, Soul Preacher, Beri EQ700 set for mids, Bad Monkey, Screamin Blues on dirt bite or off for clean, sometimes switch the Worm on vibrato or Cool Cat set all left on the first knob and all right on the right knob to thicken the tone and use the amps reverb on four.

Just my prefs, but most of the guy's I have been jamming with seem to like the tones I am getting.

I use clip on tuners, but have been thinking of doing an inline one, any suggestions on that choice...

Why can't you just lover the volume? It's the outside ring of the big knob.

Cheers

David

Mr. Mike Eldred turned me on to my 80's era Ibanez UE-300 effects pedal and I have really enjoyed the addition to my overall sound. 8)

Tried that, the level is so loud that even on the very minimum it still screams, I wish their was a trim knob on the internal. Works good on making loops from just the guitars. I guess one fix is to lower the levels on the audio of the pre-recorded loops and drag them back over to it. Just lazy though....

I have no issue with the volume importing loops using my RC3 Looper. This Loop pedal is the most useful piece of equipment I have added to my gear in 41 years of playing.

I tried a few things tonight with the Boss RC3 and discovered I had my drive channel switched on with the Blues Deluxe. Running it through the clean channel now.. Still have to crank the knob on the RC3 all the way to the left, but the sound is a lot more manageable now through both amps..

At least the other half won't hit the breaker now when I practice.....

Loop pedals are too cool...

My current board from a gig 2 months ago:

Image

Guitar
Keeley-modded Dunlop GCB95 wah (bought 1990), now with true bypass and a Fasel inductor.
Boss TU2 Tuner
Keeley compressor
Paul Cochrane Timmy - excellent pedal - just adds a hint of grit to my very clean Bandmaster, and pushes the Dr. Z in a good way.
Barber Direct Drive - my crunch pedal.
Keeley Fuzz Head - sometimes instead of crunch, sometimes with. Unlike other fuzz pedals, this one plays nicely with others.
Keeley Katana Boost - great clean transparent boost for lead work.
Mike's Tone Garage True Bypass A/B Looper:
Loop A: Ibanez AD9 Delay - 2nd effect I bought, back in August 1983
Loop B: MXR Phase 90, Ibanez SC10 Super Stereo Chorus, Boss DD6 Digital Delay

Voodoo Labs PedalPower 2 and George L cables all around.

Off board: Radial BigShot ABY Switcher between amps.

I use two Korg multi-effects units for recording mostly.

For gigs, it's usually just a compressor, delay & 'verb unit. (all custom modified stuff).

Boss BD2 Blues Driver overdrive
Boss TR1 Tremelo
DOD Compressor
Ross Noise Gate/Direct Box

That's all I use and all I need with my Blues Jr., for the type of things I do. I also play quite a bit through my new Roland Cube Street amp, which has about 9 built-in effects.
