So i played a Twin Reverb RI in a shop last weekend and i'm very impressed about it, big juicy super clean. Perfect match with my strat.

However i weren't able to test it in a band setting and i was wondering how useable it really is since it has 85 watts. The amp DOES feel a lot better controllable than the Deluxe or Super while these have 22 and 45 watts. Also you have a far better volume control, but it's still 85watts, which is huge for a full tube amp

Does someone have experience with a twin reverb in a (blues)band rehearsal setting. how load could you put the thing? I think the amp really starts to sound beautiful at around 4 - 5, but still it felt less loud than a super or deluxe...very odd.

I've gigged for decades with a Twin Reverb and frequently play this rig at medium-to-large capacity saloons......

I use both channels and set the volume controls at around 5 or 6, relying on my pedalboard to provide whatever level of overdrive the song requires.

Yep, ran my 100 watt 76 Twin for over 30 years without a hitch. The only problem is it's heavy. You'll never really push it to natural distortion so pedals are the way to go. Great amps. Here's a photo of my amp and 63 Supro Martinique.

Thanks. I sold the Twin last year to a close friend who allows me visitation rights. I just didn't need that much power and weight. I loved that amp though. The Supro I'll have till I'm wearing a dirt shirt.

Twins are great amps, and as long as you realize that with great power comes great responsibility... Use those tiltback legs so your ears and not your ankles can hear and you'll be able to dial back the volume.

From what I've seen, there's not a big difference tonally on the reissues at the different volume levels, so use your pedalboard to get any grit/dirt/crunch.

If you ever find need of some "X-rated raunch", give the EHX Big Muff π a try.

I don't know if you know this or not, but the two jacks on both channels are different. Both jack "1's" witll give you +6db gain than both jack "2's".

I use jack "2" when playing at home because I can turn the amp up to 6 and the volume on my Strat to about 6 or 7 (maybe 8 ) and it's not that loud. If I plugged into jack "1" at those settings, my ears would be getting close to bleeding.

As far as gigging goes, I'm pretty sure the twin could handle any gig on earth without miking it.

~just sayin~

If you have a hand truck, yes the Twin is gig able. Otherwise, expect chiropractor bills...

We use the $80 convertible one from Home Depot. If you're a gigging musician, get one now - don't bother with the Rock & Roll cart - this one is sturdy and you can carry your Twin + 3-4 powered monitors in one trip.

+1000!

That thing has been a true lifesaver.

Nothing new to add to the conversation really but yeah, it's gig worthy and mine really begins to take shape tonally between 3/4 on the volume knob, which is still plenty of juice, yet not too loud for most small club/gig settings. On the other hand, while in college, I played it un-mic'd in the old college gym and it was equally at home and the volume was getting up there...7/8ish and still no break up to speak of but it was roaring. I owned a late 70's silverface TR for awhile and that was a beast... it was 10 flavors of LOUD!!! from the word go but I think it was 100, not 85 watts. Anyhow...

As mentioned, you'll likely need an OD pedal to get any break-up at reasonable volume levels. The great thing about these amps is that they seem to handle just about any effect or guitar with ease. I'm on my second TRRI, I love it but it's a beast to lug around. But my oh my, that tone!

Actually, those late '70s TR's were the so-called "ultra-linear" platforms and featured a *claimed* output of 135 watts. However, the best I ever saw from one when using a bench-test rig was 122 watts. They weighed roughly eleven pounds more than the 100-watt TR it replaced. A real sumbitch to load and transport!
