I replaced the stock "Special Design" speaker in my BDRI with a new Eminence Cannabis Rex. After only an hour of playing it is so very clear how much better this speaker is than the stock speaker. The bass is tight with no flub, midrange is very smooth, and the highs are clear and sparkly with no ice pick. I expect it to only get better as the speaker breaks in.

One thing I found interesting, is that the CR sounds a little quieter than the stock speaker. The CR has an efficency of 102 dB with one watt input at one meter. I don't know the efficency of the stock speaker. It will probably get a bit louder as everything loosens up.

Thank Bluesky but I Don't know if you can post a u-tube sound comparison ?
However it's a good information and I agree on ice pick effect between volume 2-3 with stock speaker.

Congrats bluesky636!

With your tube setup, and the new speaker, I'll bet that your amp has monster tone. I really like the response curve of the CR, it looks even better than the Red White and Blues that I was considering. I am leaning towards the RWaB speaker for the 120 watt rating, so I can put it in a cab and use it with higher wattage amps also. The CR seems a great choice for a 40 watt amp. Try your original speaker in a closed back cab, it really improves the sound from that speaker. I put the same Eminence speaker (from a BJr) in a closed back cab (HRDlx extension cab), and it sounds much better than in the open back amp. Adding an extension cab, with the CR in the amp, might sound even better.

So many good choices, and so little time to try them all out. The CR is definitely on my list of "wants". :)

Some time back a client brought me a Pro Tube Series Pro Amp (1 x 12) that had always sounded lackluster. After some successful tube tweaks I focused on the OEM speaker (Jensen re-issue C12N) to take the amp to the next level. We discussed a number of options -- Celestion V30, Weber 12F150, Tone Tubby, etc -- and finally decided to give the Cannabis Rex a go. That speaker was like injecting the amp with a 60cc mix of adrenalin and steriods. It really let the amp "be all that it could be". I think you made a wise choice, Bill.

Congrats! We need some audio samples so we share your excitement

It's weird that the CR is quieter, specially with an efficiency of 102 dB. Isn't the stock speaker also made by Eminence? Anyone know which speaker model it is? I thought I read somewhere that it was a Legend?

When I was testing 15" speakers in my DRRI I found the Eminence Legend 1518 to be the most efficient, it is 102.2 dB. So if the CR is 102 dB it should be pretty loud, no?

Both speakers are made by Eminence, but both Eminence and Fender have been tight-lipped about the stock speaker specs. I also assume that the stock speaker would be less efficient, but maybe it really is special/efficient.

Thanks, all.

Sorry, guys. You won't ever see me on You Tube. I'm a much better guitar/amp tech than I am a guitar player.

Yes, I believe that my tube set got me to 95% of my desired tone. The CR gets another 4%. Just need to dial it in now for that last 1%. :D

Yes, I have seen read that the stock speaker is an Eminence Legend. Not sure of the model. Looking at the specs for the 12" ones they are all around 100 dB. The CR at 102 dB won't really sound that much louder but I am sure it will be a little louder than it sounds now once everything loosens up. My tube set reduces the overall gain enough that I can crank my amp to "8" on the clean channel and still hold a conversation in my room without shouting.

I really don't have a need for a separate cabinet since it is just me playing away in my home studio. Last night I tried my darkest sounding guitar (neck GFS 59 Vintage Humbucker in my Lyon by Washburn) and brighest sounding guitar (bridge GFS Neovin Vintage Noiseless in my Squier "Nocaster") and it handled both with equal aplomb. :D

We'll be the judge of that! :) Just play a couple of chords so we can hear what it sounds like...

4% resulted in WOW?? What did the 95% do to you then?

I tested both Eminence Legend 1518 (102.2 dB 150W) and Big Ben (101.5 dB 225W) and I can tell you that the Legend is much more efficient, very loud and very clean. So yes, 1 or 2 dB makes a big difference.

Remember, it is a BDlx, so he started at probably at least 90%, the tubes took it up another 5% (first wow), then the speaker another 4% (second wow). So the wow factor is about 5%. Sounds reasonable. :)

Maybe if I ever get a computer camera and mic.

You don't want to know. The speaker was the icing on the cake. :D

As an electrical engineer, I can assure you that 1 or 2 dB, while a noticable difference, is not that great.

I've spent a lot of time researching and tweaking my BDRI.

The results I reported come from my experience with both speakers on stage and playing at home... I can tell you that with the Legend I couldn't turn my DRRI passed 4 maybe 5 on stage without being too loud and asked to turn it down, which sucks cause I couldn't get the amp to its sweet spot, passed 6. With the Big Ben I can get away with vol at 6 or 7 in the same bar I go to.

Not sure if this has to do with speaker efficiency or something else, but yes, some speakers are louder and stay clean.

There are a number of factors involved: Efficiency/sensitivity, frequency response peaks and valleys, speaker dispersion, speaker breakup, room acoustics, etc. All make live comparisons difficult. Most speaker measurements are taken in anechoic chambers (very interesting places if you have had the opportunity to visit one as I have) or under carefully controlled room conditions.

I used to be an anechoic, then I joined that program and have been anechol free ever since.
