If your friend use JJ and Mullard, why you can't trust him more than stranger in this forum ?

You can play his amp ; do you like ? Buy same tubes.

You talk about which tubes ? All or only power tubes ?

JJ, Electro Harmonix, Tube Amp Doctor, Gold Lion, Mullard and more are good tubes.

Don't forget to check and reajust bias for your new power tubes. If you don't want to do that and take chance , better to buy the original fender tube. It is not a warranty that the bias wil be alright but more chance with those tubes

Hey stratele52,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I love his amp but alas mine will never sound like his. He plays through a custom '57 twin. I do trust him and use this forum to gather accumulative knowledge. I am talking about replacing all tubes. I am sending one of my blues jrs off for some billm mods and want to retube soon after it arrives. I guess my question was kind of broad and for that I am sorry.

I thought your friend have the same amp, sorry . But their tubes are good for your amp. You are right about this forum, somebody can have a Blue Junior and try many tubes and tell you which tube he like more and why.

Hi Brown005,

Are you getting the adjustable bias from Billm? If so, you may not need new tubes as a cooler bias can really improve the sound. If you do change output tubes, as stratele52 pointed out, check/reset the bias.

The two types of output tubes that I've used in my BJr (with adjustable bias) besides the stock tubes are, GT EL84-S and the 7189 "preferred series" from thetubestore, and both sound great. Both types are very similar sounding, clean and tight sound, with the GTs being a little bit warmer. For preamp tubes, after trying several types, I went with the Sovtek 12AX7WC in all three spots. I can get any sound from this amp, from very clean and sparkly, to smooth overdrive with great sustain and feedback. Using my POD in front I can get fantastic sounds almost like a Marshall or Mesa, with those presets on the POD. It takes every type of pedal very well.

If you don't get the adjustable bias on your BJr, I would definitely consider the 7189, they are extremely rugged and can take the factory hot bias of the BJr very well.

I hate to be the one to piss on your parade but your amp ain't never gonna sound like a Custom Shop '57 tweed Twin. There's no amount of sonic sorcery or electronic alchemy known to mankind that can make that happen.

Some more choices. Don't bother with the gold pin option, though.

Lol Arjay that's exactly what I said it could never sound like my friends 57. There is nothing I could do to get it even remotely close to that amp. I like the blues jr and need nothing more. I am getting the upgrades to see what the fuss is all about. I intend to compare the stock and the modded blues jr just for fun. Yes I am getting the adjustable bias control. I did see eurotubes web cite and their kits look nice thanks for the recommendations.

Any possibility of checking the bias settings of the stock vs the modded while you're at it? :D Maybe compare the two with the stock tubes in each, before re-tubing the modded one for a fair comparison of the Billm mods themselves. Great opportunity for a rare A/B comparison, let us know.
