I'm just curious what the differences are between them aside for the speaker sizes. I'm assuming the deluxe reverb has a tad more clean headroom with the 7 additional watts but what is different about the tones?

My local guitar shop only has a princeton and I tried that out and really liked it but i don't want to buy it yet until I try out a deluxe reverb.

The Deluxe Reverb is a bit more versatile. The Princeton is a little iffy for gigging. The DRRI does have a bit more headroom. The Princeton's a fine recording/practice amp but the DRRI is a fine gigging AND recording amp.

+1

As well, the bass response will be more robust and articulate with the DRRI's 12-inch speaker.

Good points already, but if you gig with a drummer who can't tone it down,I would go with the Deluxe, you can always mic them, but I have always preferred an unmic'd sound myself, but will do it when I need to....either that or find a drummer who can play tastefully...which is a tall order in itself.

Get one of each

If you have to choose one and plan to gig just go with the DRRI. For $100 more you get a lot more IMO, not that there's anything wrong with the PRRI :)

The tremolo circuit in the PRRI is implemented differently vs. the DRRI. I like the more natural, less clicky, tremolo on the PRRI.

I've basically knocked the princeton out of the search. While it is a great sounding amp, I do not like the idea of it falling short in the gig territory. I also can't get over spending that much for the smaller cab size and 10" speaker it comes with too. (If I didn't ever play gigs then I probably would want the Princeton.)

Now, I am trying to decide on the DRRI or the Supersonic 22. An absolute must is great sparkly cleans with enough headroom for smaller to kind of moderate sized gigs. I like how the drive channel on the supersonic is supposed to be surprisingly good but it's not a make or break thing because I use an OD pedal. I also like how the supersonic has the two switchable all tube clean channels (This makes me suspicious in that I feel having that versatility may compensate the overall tone of both of them considering the price?)
I do really like how the DRRI has the vibrato though. The DRRI also comes with a better speaker I think.

Any thoughts?

Personally I wouldn't rely on a 22 watter if I was playing with a heavy handed drummer, mic'd up or not. I've played with guys who sounded like their skins were on the verge of breaking with every hit and in that situation I want at least 50 watts and 2 twelves.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hi Rossfloss, You might want to read some threads & reviews about both amps before deciding. I was considering one or the other, & I decided on the DRRI on the basis of the many comments I read on both amps. The DRRI had very many positive comments on both it's tone & reliability. The SS22 seemed to have some issues, perhaps minor ones, not sure. I would've prefered the features of the SS22, but the DRRI has such a long history of satisfied owners, it just sold itself. TBH though, I'm not sure how much clean headroom you'll get on either amp at higher volume levels. You could always mic it I guess. Hope that helped. cheers.

That's part of appeal of the DRR. The breakup on it is a beautiful thing. It does have a decent amount of headroom. If you want really great cleans at almost any volume a Twin is the way to go. I gig regularly with a 20 watt amp and have no problem. Sometimes even with a couple of horns. An understanding of stage volume and dynamics is important when you gig. I go to local clubs all the time where the sound levels border on white noise. Usually it's because of an overaggressive drummer or one clown who constantly creeps up the volume knob. My solution would be to get another drummer or another band and look for professional musicians.

yeah...I've played with guys like that...for awhile.
There's no sense in wasting time with a drummer who thinks he is the only one on stage, especially after investing so much of my time and money getting the tone I have, those heavy handed guys can go somewhere else, and that goes for the guys with the loud amps who want to drown everyone else out...you're not only getting a $@!&#* sound, you're losing your hearing,a complete waste of time...as usual, ymmv.

Twenty watts and two good efficient twelves go a long way too. There's not whole lot of volume change from 20 to 50 watts.

Jim Campilongo uses a little PR and has never had a problem being heard... even when playing onstage with Pete Townsend & his Vibro-Kings.

I too prefer the bias-modulation tremolo of the PR as well.

Also, the PR has a different phase inverter than the DR, making the amp break up somewhat smoother & also a bit warmer than the DRRI.

Both great amps- I don't see either on as being "better", play both and go with the one you prefer the TONE of.
