For about a month or so my Hot Rod Deluxe amp has some sort of "scratching" noise coming from it (that's the only word I can think of to describe it - like a cat scratching cardboard). It happens even when nothing is plugged into it, so I know it isn't my cords or patch cords. It's usually a few minutes after it has warmed up.

Has anyone had that? Any ideas what it could be? Thanks.

Have you lost a guinea pig or hamster recently?

Could be a bad solder joint opening up after things warm up or the beginnings of a microphonic tube.

Ha - wish it was just a hampster. Otherwise I fear I'll have to take it to a repair guy and pay $ to fix it.

Tap on the tubes first with the eraser end of a pencil to see if any make odd noises. If so, just replace them. Cheap fix. If solder joint problem (common in these amps) a tech would need to reflow the faulty solder joints.

It could be a valve that have not the vaccum as expected. Test valves one by one with a spare part 12ax7/ECC83. Start by V1. For power valves, if you change them, a bias setting is mandatory. But take care about lethal voltage 450V !

Yes, but the missing guiea pig/hamster idea would be more interesting.

When my wife and I were first married, her sister gave us a guinea pig as a pet. Damn thing was an escape artist and scared the crap out of me one night while I was having a midnight snack in the dark and it ran across my feet. Had to clean food off the ceiling the next day.

I had a valve go "microphonic".

Touch it gently on the tip and if it makes a sound like when you touch a live microphone at a gig, change it.
