I'm looking to get a Blues Jr. off e-bay. (ebay has better prices than guitar center sometimes) Just needing to know if it's loud enough for small gigs without being mic'd. I play in the bedroom alot so a bigger tube amp would probably be too much right now. Thanks guys for your input.
Also, can I put the 12" Celestion speaker out of my Mustang III in the Blues Jr? Would this be considered an upgraded speaker?

It should be plenty loud for "small" gigs as a couple of my buddys routinely use their Blues Jrs. as a duet for Jazz gigs in smaller rooms. As for putting in a 12" speaker I don't know but I dare say that someone a lot more knowledgeable than I -such as Arjay-would know.

+1 on enough volume for small gigs. The BJR at 15Watts is pretty loud, this is not at all comparable to a 15W solid state amp. The speaker in the BJR is pretty decent although I sometimes use a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 112 extension cab. It has a closed back and gives a little fuller sound. Clubs of 50 or 60 people in size are just fine for the BJR. With regard to putting in a speaker from a Mustang amp I wouldn't see that as an upgrade at all. The first thing you need to do is decide if you like the amps tone and give the new speaker a chance to break in. If you still want to change it there are a lot of good after market choices, but a Mustang amp speaker in my opinion would not be one of them.

The BJr is indeed loud enough for smaller gigs. Be careful when using it in the bedroom, though - it can still shake the walls of your house pretty good

It actually depends on your bandmates, the kind of music you play and how much headroom you need. I've heard Blues Jr.'s get buried in the mix. I've seen them do just fine. Fifteen watts is iffy. An extension cab would help a lot. I've seen Princeton's, Egnater Tweakers, and even my HRDlx get buried. On the other side of the coin, I've done small gigs with a 6 watt S/F Champ with a drummer, bass player and a keyboardist. They were all serious professionals and completely understood how sound dynamics work. A really great drummer is pretty hard to find.

+1

That said, I never personally gig with anything smaller than 22 watts (you can guess the platform).

In a jam session situation or an audition for a group position I always try to determine what kind of gear the other people are using first before I choose which amp I will take. Nothing worse than having to seriously mic up and having no appreciable monitor use from your little amp just because the others are totally drowning you out ... except maybe coming with too big a rig and not being able to adjust into the sweet spot because you're too freaking loud. I make sure I have an amp for all occasions. 15, 22, 40 & 55 watts is enough of a selection to cover pretty much anything I might be interested in. If they're using 100 watt full stacks I'm not interested because I want to keep my hearing. If it's a teeny amp thing in an apartment where noise is an issue I'm also not interested because I like to hear my amps breathe.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
