I have been contemplating a speaker swap for my Blues Junior, but given what I have read and heard with respect to the effects of the BJr's small cabinet, I am now considering an extension cabinet for a little more breathing room. So now I am keeping my eye out for a used, empty 112 extension cabinet into which I can install my new (as yet undecided) speaker.

Questions - What is the minimum cabinet size I should be looking for, and is there any magic in the ratios of height to width to depth?

In terms of materials and construction, anything I should be looking for, especially looking to avoid (like particle board vs. plywood)?

Are most of the baffles and speaker mounting screws standard?

Are bass cabinets okay for a guitar amp (for example, I saw a 112 Fender Rumble bass cab, would that work or are those dimensions built to deal with the lower bass frequencies)?

I am thinking I would just bypass the stock speaker and go directly into the extension, but if I wanted to run both, what mods would that require?

Also, I wouldn't mind hearing opinions on open back vs. closed back cabinets.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate your advice and opinions. If there is anything else I should be considering not listed above, please lay it on me.

When I was looking around at cabinets, these caught my eye, the quality looks great and I'll bet they'd open that amp right up in either a 12"+10" or a 2x10".

This listing shows real promise......

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Fender-Blues ... 588d0b7816

A pair of Eminence Ragin Cajuns, Copperheads, or Celestion G10 Greenbacks would put some real beef behind that baffle board and let the amp sing.

I put a Cannabis Rex in my Blues Junior and another one in the 1 x 12 ext. cab from Seismic Audio http://www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/Empty-Guitar-Cabinet-1x12-p/luke-1x12v_blbl.htm I put some more rubber feet on one of the sides and stand it up long ways and it gets the amp right where I need it.

I also have another ext. cab from them http://www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/Empty-Guitar-Cabinet-2x12-p/luke-2x12tr_blbl.htm that is a 2 x 12 and I have two 16ohm Texas Heats in it and sometime hook it up to the Blues Jr., but it is mostly for my Blues Deluxe.

Both cabs are made of Birch plywood and have some really good tone.

I run these in stereo and the tone is awesome....

I hooked a 1 x15 ext. closed back cab loaded with a Peavey Sheffield Pro 1500 to the Blues Jr. once and really liked the tone I got from it, so much that I am thinking about maybe getting a setup like that....

Now THAT sounds very appealing. I have thought before that a 15 watt amp and a 15 inch speaker would be a very good match. Converting the BJr to a head, with a 15 inch speaker cab would be very cool. :D

This is where I found a 1 x 15 cab http://www.thevintagesound.com/store/tweed-pro-combo-cabinet-p-205.html that can be cut out for a Blues Jr., but I don't know if it would sound as good as the closed back ext. with the open backed Blues Jr. together...

I know Peavy has an old tube amp combo with a 15 in it....

Those custom cabinets that hold the amp and speakers are cool, but I would prefer an extension cab instead of a bigger combo. The extension cab could be used in place of the BJr internal speaker even without conversion to a head. I really like the sound of the BJr with an external 1x12 in a closed back cab and the internal speaker disconnected. I just discovered that if I turn my HRDlx ext cab on it's side, the BJr fits almost perfectly on top of the cab (which was a side), sounds great and looks cool too.

There are no mods to the amp itself other than housing it in this cabinet with 2 Scumback speakers.

That is absolutely beautiful work of art! Are those jointed planks? That must've been some patient work.

This is an intriguing option that I might consider myself. The fifteen's "beef" would a great method for taming the "bite" that paired EL84's are notorious for. A vintage Jensen C15P would be ideal.

That bite is one of the reasons I stuck a Cannabis Rex in mine.
With a Usable Frequency Range: 70Hz-5kHz on the C-Rex and the Usable freq. range: 40 Hz - 3 kHz of the Peavey Sheffield PRO 1500 was a nice match.

I bought two 15" closed speaker cab's for $100.00 loaded with the Sheffield's for a friend, but before I gave them to him I hooked them up to my stereo BDRI and Blues Jr. rig, son of a b, it sounded good...I almost did not let him have them, but he needed them for a gig on the fourth of July so I gave in. He is using them with 1975 Peavy Classic 100 with 4-10's and one of the 15 ext. cabs....

For now I am using EQ pedals to tame the bite. One sound I cannot stand is that tinny $@! bumble bee distortion that some believe is good tone...

I've changed my Jr. to a head then built some cabinets to match. There's some info over on the 21frets.com forum, check it out. It's a shame Fender doesn't consider extension speaker cabinets for all their amp sizes.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking maybe I'll just slip over to Chet's one night and grab his, problem solved

I just ordered a cabinet (It's still a secret. Pics when it's done) from here: http://www.newellamps.com/index.html Decent prices and the work looks good.
