Popping in the 6V6s will reduce the wattage, but not down to 22 watts. This topic is discussed in great length all over the internet. I did the same thing with my 40 watt Hot Rod Deluxe. I just had to rebias and in fact, the HRD could not be biased hot enough for the 6V6s to do damage. It worked fine for me, but I was not cranking the amp either.

I think the guy at EUROTUBES has a lot of good information and tube "kits" for guitar amps.

Best of luck!

DOC.TONE,

Which 6V6 did you use?

Well, I fell into by luck a nice collection of NOS RCAs from the late 1950s. You can find good RCAs on eBay for reasonable prices. These babies are built like tanks.

DOC.TONE, if you want creamy 6V6GT tone with good headroom... try a good 1950-60 US made brown based GTY. These tubes can take 6L6GC plate voltages (and laugh). I bias them to about 9-11 watts, of idle dissipation, per tube for Class AB1.

My favorite is the Raytheon JAN-CRP 6V6GTY. But, any RCA, Sylvania, TungSol, GE is fine.

I have the Fender Super Sonic 22 and was experiencing the channel switching pop as well. I was told by an extremely respected amp guru Roy Blankenship to simply switch around the 12AX7 pre-amp tubes. Just take out all the 12AX7 tubes and try them in different order until the pop goes away, this completely worked for me. It took several tries, trying each tube in a different 12AX7 tube socket, but I found the right combination and the pop was gone without having to replace any tubes. That was about 6 months ago and I've gigged every weekend since and the pop has never returned. You could always try replacing pre-amp tubes as well. Thank You Roy Blankenship!!
