One night after having a few beers I turned my Deville up past 5 (master) and it didnt get any louder just more distorted but continued to play at that level for 45 min. I thought all was well until the next day I plug in and its all quiet and a strange kind of distorted tone even on the clean channel. You know the way such combo amps sound before they warm up and you got no volume or bite to the tone for a few minutes ? Thats what it sounds like now no matter how long its been on.

I tried changing the power tubes same result. The fuse is fine. Used another speaker cabinet connected to the ext. speaker jack on the Deville w/ same result coming out of different speakers. I closely checked with magnifying lens and flashlight all solder connections especially around power tubes and all seem perfect.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be? A capacitor or another faulty component?

Appreciate any insights

Cheers

James

Hi no_reissue4me_plz,

What about the preamp tubes, have you tried replacing any of them? Or even make sure that they are fully seated?

Hi, havent tried replacing them but might look into that.. as far as them being seated they seem to be. do you know if they all must be in to run the amp minimally so to speak?

Yes, if you remove any one of the three preamp tubes there will be no sound out. V3, which isn't a preamp tube but a phase inverter (pi), is generally counted as a preamp tube as it uses the same type of tubes as the other two preamp tubes V1 and V2, and it is easier to lump them all together as "preamp tubes" rather than "preamp and pi tubes".

Thanks for the info. Should I be able to plug directly into the preamp-in input and play that way through the amp? because its dead quiet I just noticed..

Good idea, plug directly into the "Power Amp In", bypassing the preamp section of the amp. The volume and tone controls and both preamp tubes are bypassed, but reverb and presence will still be in the circuit. If you get sound this way, then maybe it is a preamp tube problem. If not......well, try that first.
