I understand where you are coming from and can appreciate it, but not everyone shares the same opinion. To each his own. :D

My wife had a 72 Vega when we got married. We drove it to Florida and back on our honeymoon in 1976 and lived to tell about it. We didn't have much money back then (Still don't it seems sometimes!) so on Saturday nights we would sit outside with some cheap wine and watch it rust.

Not sure how you reached your conclusion.

Do the math :P

I did.

I chose an example tube set that I use and have had excellent results with. I also chose a speaker that has been highly recommended as an improvement over the stock speaker and doesn't cost a fortune. Have you actually used or heard a BDRI configured with the tubes and speakers you listed or did you simply select components that were more expensive without actually hearing what they sound like? Either way, my point is simply that one does not have to spend a ton of money to improve the sound of an amp, any amp, if one does the research and shops wisely.

I simply gave different options... but yes I have tried most of these tubes and speakers :) not necessarily in a BD though. And I do agree with the Emi you recommended, very sweet speaker, I heard it in a DR and loved it! So it might work in the BDRI. The Winged C tubes I listed worked great in my BD.

Not trying to piss anyone off either but everyone has their opinions and favorites. Making generalized statements about something without proof to back it up doesn't cut it with me.

Now you done pi$$ed me off! :P

All my statements were based on my experience with my own BD, I wouldn't be in this thread if I didn't have my own personal experience, owning and gigging with both amps... have you ever owned a DR or DRRI? Maybe you have and prefer the BD, but as others have mentioned they're two different amps, 6V6 vs 6L6. If I wanted another 6L6 amp it won't be a BD, there are many other options out there... but if I had to choose between the two then it's the DR for sure, for tone and reliability

Back in the early 90s my main amp was a Peavey Classic 50, great sounding amp! When the BD came out I thought that's the amp for me! I mean it's tweed and has Blues written on it :D I was young and stupid, I traded the Peavey for the BD. I gigged with it a lot and was never happy with the tone. Then I took an extended break from playing... one of the first thing I did when I got into playing again was trade that BD for the DRRI, always wanted one. It was love at first sight, or is that first note :) sure I modified mine some, but it doesn't mean that out of the box it wasn't a sweet sounding amp, that was the reason I bought it, I just wanted to make it my own DRRI.

The marketing on the BD was amazing. I remember it well. Like you said CB, tweed, had blues written on it, I figured I'm a Bluesman, what a perfect fit! I played with that amp for almost two hours and couldn't get what I wanted out of it. The HRDlx had some clean potential for me, but after I got it home and gigged with it at gigging volume, was when I found all it's shortcomings like the speaker was farty and loose at higher volumes, it couldn't cut a mix and the reverb was horrible and so were the drive channels. Tube changes helped somewhat, but after all the problems I had with it, I decided to unload it while it still had some warranty on it. My Egnater Rebel 20 is everything I was looking for in an amp and it has been solid as a rock for over a year and a half. I never looked back.

That was exactly what I thought :)

I actually liked the cleans on that amp, but it didn't work well at gigging volumes for some reason... and that drive was so horrible sounding! I have no idea why I was so against pedals back then, I didn't even own a tube screamer, I just wanted the amp to do it all. I might've had better luck playing clean and using a tube screamer...

CB, funny thing is the Egnater's gain is so natural sounding, I rarely need to use pedals. I control the amount of grit with my guitar. The amp cleans up nicely. It's a fun little amp. With two 112 cabs, it can totally cut both the HRDlx or DeVille with no problem.

My HRDlx lasted three months before it's love affair with my amp tech.

A fifteen-month honeymoon for me.

Then banished to the "consignment gulag" at my local music store.

Thankfully I managed to sell it for forty-five bucks more than I paid due to a hefty price increase on the new models and the fact that mine was a virtual cream puff with over three years left on the warranty.

Arjay , my blues deluxe lasted a year, maybe. Most of that time was in the closet once I got the drri .It doesnt have a bad clean sound, but like supro says it doesnt cut thru the mix very well .I also didnt like the volume pots on the thing. Hard to tame it sometimes. The drri has been easy to work with and bone stock it sings .Not had any problems other than power tubes after a year and a half.Sure some people might try to mod it, but alot of people dont understand about breaking in the speaker.Once that is acomplished it sounds damn nice. 8)

I vote for adding the 22watt Deluxe Reverb. I would take it to guitar jams with my Alesis SR-16. We sat down and jammed to the beat. Deluxe Reverb+ TS808+ DD6=100% Tone forever. Now all that great guitar tone from across The Atlantic: that's another company. Seeing Cream for the first experience was amazing. Those 2 Marshall's behind E.C. being taller than he was Bruce had an equally impressive rig.He played the EB style Gibson Bass. That thick sound. I had been playing for 4/5 years by then so I knew (a little). Although Bruce played a 'lead bass' of sorts, it always interweaved threadeding Clapton's work magically. They were the first British "power trio" I had seen. Not many have even came close to Cream and their subsequent early tours.

Just add Strat or Tele and stir.

I think you and I and perhaps a handful of others here are the only ones who personally witnessed the magic and the mojo of Cream.

Those "grafitti artists" who defaced countless walls back in the day with the epithet "CLAPTON IS GOD" weren't lying.

Easy and relatively inexpensive to tame the loudness of a BDRI and improve the sound significantly. Just replace the stock tubes with the following:

V1 - Philips JAN 5751
V2 - JJ 12AX7
V3 - Balanced JJ 12AT7
V4/5 - JJ 6L6GC

Bias the power tubes to about 83 to 85 mV at the Fender test point. The new tubes in V1 and V3 will reduce the total gain of the amp and make the volume cotrols on both the clean and drive channels more responsive and manageable. Proper power tube bias will really sweeten the amp up. Instant tone monster.

Just installed these on my Fender Blues Deluxe USA made and what a difference it made... thanks alot for the suggested tubes bluesky636 it made the volumes controls more manageble just like you said... I would recomend this for any amp that needs to be tamed... thanks again bluesky636
