I have the Blues Deluxe Reissue - but wondered what people thought about the 65 Deluxe Reverb as a replacement?

Would I get a better sound? Would I miss the overdrive of the Blues Deluxe Reissue for rock & blues?

My main concern with the Blues Deluxe Reissue is that it's too loud.

Many thanks for any feedback.

Easy and relatively inexpensive to tame the loudness of a BDRI and improve the sound significantly. Just replace the stock tubes with the following:

V1 - Philips JAN 5751
V2 - JJ 12AX7
V3 - Balanced JJ 12AT7
V4/5 - JJ 6L6GC

Bias the power tubes to about 83 to 85 mV at the Fender test point. The new tubes in V1 and V3 will reduce the total gain of the amp and make the volume cotrols on both the clean and drive channels more responsive and manageable. Proper power tube bias will really sweeten the amp up. Instant tone monster. :D

If you have to choose one then DRRI is the winner. Forget the drive on the BDRI, I hated it when I owned mine... get you any overdrive pedal and you'd be much happier with either amp. The DRRI cranked will give you some amazing tone, you might not even use a pedal!

Per the OP: "My main concern with the Blues Deluxe Reissue is that it's too loud."

The tubes I suggested cost a lot less than a new or even used DRRI or anyother amp and the tone they provide is fantastic in both the clean and drive channels.

True, but he also said "Would I get a better sound? Would I miss the overdrive of the Blues Deluxe Reissue for rock & blues?"

The answer is yes and no :mrgreen:

Have you played a BDRI with the tubes and bias setup I suggested? If not, then you have no basis for your comment. I've played both a DRRI and my BDRI and I'll stick with my BDRI any day of the week. :wink:

Not exactly... but I did gig with an original BD in the 90s, it was my main amp for years. I did have a JAN 5751 in there, still have that tube but not the amp :) never heard of JJs back then but I did have Winged C 6L6, even put a Celestion V30 in there, no way that amp comes close to a DRRI. But hey, as they say, tone is subjective, we can all pick and choose which amp works best for us :) to me the sweet tone of 6V6 is way better than any Hot Rod amp. My 40 Watt 6L6 amp comes in 4 x 10 configuration and it aint a DeVille, had one of those too...

Here's proof of the amp, which I traded last year after owning it for 15 years... it never really worked for me.

Fair enough. But given the Op's comments, if he is basicly happy with the BDRI (which he didn't say he wasn't), spending $100 in tubes to try get a better tone makes more sense than spending $600 to $1000 for a new amp which he may not like any better. :D

I am in a similar situation. I have a Blues deluxe reissue. I like it but...

I bought a Silver Face 78 Champ two weeks ago and the Champ sounds quite a bit better than the BDRI so now I am thinking, "Maybe I should be getting a Silver Face Deluxe Reverb to match the sweetness of the Champ at higher volume.

You can sell the BDRI for maybe $450 and get the DR for maybe $750 so the turnaround cost is $300. If you are talking about new tubes and new speaker in the BDRI that will cost about $250 so the difference is only $50.

Decisions, Decisions, silly but fun. We are all on a journey to truth and tone.

Complete set of JJ tubes from Eurotubes = $68.00
Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker from Musician's Friend = $95.00
Total cost = $163.00
Difference = $137.00, not $50.00

Celestion Vintage 30 from Musician's Friend = $145
Total cost = $269.80
Difference = $30.20

Or...

"Vintage Package" from The Tube Store = $279.80
http://thetubestore.com/sba-fender-blues-deluxe-3.html
Celestion Gold from Musician's Friend = $289
Total Cost = $568.80
Difference = +$268.80!!!

So clearly the DRRI is the winner! :mrgreen:
