So I have a Fender Pro Junior that I would like to convert into a head. I took the chassis out of the cabinet today to look at it, and the biggest problem that I see right now is that the tubes are oriented horizontally. Has anybody done/tried this mod or have any ideas as to a solution? I was also thinking that someone might sell a pre-drilled chassis that would work for this project, so if you have a link to such a site that would be awesome. Thanks for all your help in advance!

Doubtful that such a chassis exists as the Pro Junior is hardly an amp worth the time and money that it would take to do this conversion. If you want a larger speaker cab to replace the stock 10" speaker, just pick up an extension cab and hook it up.

+1

Such a head conversion, if even possible, would likely cost several hundred $$$. That'd buy a pretty righteous speaker enclosure.

Or a better amp already in head form.

I don't know why you guys are Pro Jr haters. I think it is a great little amp. It a reasonably priced 15 watt amp. I think you can find a head box for it if you go to mojotone.com or possibly weberspeakers.com or antique music supply at www.tubesandmore.com. You will end up with the same style mount as what you have there, but in head box form. That is how fender does some of the amp head boxes for the amps... Vox does it that way as well.

Good luck...

No, you won't. As the OP already noted and anyone who knows anything about Fender tube amps recognizes, all Fender combos are designed with the tubes mounted hanging down from what most would consider to be the side of he amp chassis and at a 90 degree angle from the transformers. All Fender heads are designed with the tubes facing up from the top of the amp chassis along with the transformers. If you can design or buy such a cabinet to accomodate a Pro Jr., I would love to see it. And by the way, no one here said they hated Pro Jrs, only that the cost of doing what the OP wants to do would be way in excess of what the amp is worth and there are already better amps out there for less than a conversion would cost.

I think an easy example of what I am talking about would be the head cab for a Vox AC4TV. That is the same chassis as the combo version. My VHT Special 6 also has a head cab with the same design. You aren't going to be able to put it in a Marshall style head box, but there are alternatives.

Give it a rest .... please.
I challenge you. Where? Where in this thread did somone declare they hate Pro Juniors? A Pro Junior head conversion is not an economically feasible project. Period. That's all anybody said before you posted this. And they were right.

Like I said, show us a cab that will take an unmodified Pro Jr. You are talking two different amp designs.

Well obviously, I am not doing much good here, but if you can't find a head cab for your amp, you can always cut down the original cab and put a bottom board, then retolex. Good luck...

The point that the more experienced people here are making is simple but you're not hearing it (or listening).

Pro Jr. is a fine amp for the price point and as is with the speaker Fender put in it. You may want to change tubes, speakers to taste, but as a combo amp it's great.

For the amount of time, effort and money, it's not worth it to convert it into a head. If you want a head, buy one of the amps you have instead or the gazillion other ones. Buy the new Pawnshop Greta - I heard it at NAMM with 6 people so it was easy to hear and through a 2x12 it's great for the bedroom guys.

The other thing that has people scratching their head why is that most people who cut down Fenders into heads are taking Twin Reverbs or other large combos that are insanely heavy. At 20lbs, the Pro Jr. is perfectly portable and less than 15 cubic inches.

The other option the OP has is to unhook the internal speaker and drive a cab with it - that way he can use it as a head and a combo, hasn't ruined an amp, and now can pull double duty.

Excellent suggestion.

So you would take an amp that looks like this:

and cut it down until it looks like this:

Hopefully the OP won't take your advice and destroy a perfectly good cabinet.

I certainly wouldn't do it. but that is one way to do it. Also if someone likes what they have and mods it so that others don't like it, but he still does... who cares? is it that big a deal? Life is to be enjoyed, people should not condescend to each other, it is annoying. Love your brother and enjoy what you make of your life... and most of all.. Relax... nobody scores points on a silly message board... May God be with you.. and please..do yourself a favor.. Learn to type without a snotty tone... People will appreciate you in the amount that you truly deserve....

Whatever. This thread is almost a year old. The OP has either done what he wanted to do or he listened to the advice given here and changed his mind.
