It seems that some feel the need to swap out the stock PRRI/DRRI transformers for "bigger iron" such as Heyboer, Marstran, etc. I currently own a stock PRRI & DRRI and am wondering if there really is any benefit to "upgrading" the transformers or is this largely snake oil. Who makes the stock transformers? Are they within spec to the originals used in the older model PRs and DRs (so I've read they are).

The re-issue iron is still made by Schumacher (EIA manufacturer code "606"). I've yet to see one of their trannies fail under normal operating conditions.

"Takes a licking and keeps on ticking."...if they still make 'em as good as they used to,I would see no reason to change at all. :)

I've beat my early '90s TRRI like the proverbial rented mule and have yet to experience any problems.
