For the longest time I would use my blues jr III with the gain at 4 and the master at 5 for bedroom levels and master at 12 for rehearsing levels. I did this for the longest time and after a while I became unsatisfied with the clean tones and my overdriven tones just seemed to be lacking a bit of heat. I started swapping out preamp tubes and got myself a bit closer to where I was wanting to be but was still a little unsatisfied.

I found the very simple and obvious solution to the problem yesterday and now I feel like a complete idiot for not realizing this since the start. I just needed to turn the gain up from 4 to 5... That's it..

Now my clean tones have the fullness and sustain I was wanting and the overdriven tones aren't lacking anything now. The single coils in my strat finally cut through the mix like my buddy's humbucker set up.

Always remember to tweak around with the knobs before thinking a new amp is in order. Sounds stupid but I almost fell for it.

A lot of people could benefit from taking your advice. Some even complain of too much treble in their amp, yet refuse to turn the treble knob down past a certain point because of some weird preconceived reasons. :?

My BJr doesn't have a gain, only a volume and a master. :(

Sorry I meant volume. Which can add dirt so I just sort of think of it as a gain knob.

@usmc Haha, I too am guilty of the ol' "frantically troubleshoot the heck out of my amp and pedal board only to find the guitar volume knob down" maneuver!
