Got a Fender Supersonic 60 112 combo. Seems as though the Gain 2 isnt functioning, I can turn the gain 1 all the way down and the gain 2 all the way up and get nothing. Then I turn the gain 1 all the way up and get a thin weak distortion. All the tubes appear to be lit and yes they are the original tubes (crap I know). Could it be as simple as a tube change, can a tube be lit and still be bad? Any help is much appreciated.

Yes.

IIRC on the modern Fender amps, the tone controls must turned up for the amp to develop any volume. If they're zeroed out (ie: all the way off) you may not have any gain at all.

That's the way it works too. Gain 1 must be turned up in order for Gain 2 to work. Think as Gain 1 as a volume and Gain 2 as the EQ.

I'll third this motion, this is normal operation. When gain 1 is turned down all the way, the signal is grounded, resulting in no output. When gain 2 is turned all the way down, it is almost grounded, so you can still hear a little sound if you crank gain 1 up. Looking at the schematic you can see that gain 1 is the input to tube V1(B), and gain 2 is on the output of the same tube, so turning either pot all the way down will kill the signal in the burn channel.

Ok. But the amp sounds like crap all of a sudden and all tubes are lit except the v9 but if I understand d Correctly its just the reverb send tube. When the gain 1 is up and I turn up the gain 2 there is almost no difference.

Yes, V9 is for reverb, and is a 12AT7 and may not light as bright as the others which are 12AX7. It can be hard to see the filament glow from some 12AT7 tubes.

Sounding "like crap" could mean anything. You may simply have to adjust the knobs to get the right combination. Tone controls, volumes and gains all interact with each other to shape the sound.

I understand tone is subjective. The tone knobs are set where I've always set them. Im no stranger to using tube amps, I guess I should have stated that. I've been gigging regularly for 20 yrs. I usually run both gains at about 1 o'clock and get a nice round classic rock tone but now its very thin and brittle. I've ordered a JJ standard retube kit for it. So we'll see if that remedy's the problem. Thanks for the input guys. Look up Sonic Shakedown on You Tube. That's me.

Nice promo video for your band! I finally gave up on my SS60 v1. I stopped short of any PCB mods, but it was just too bright and lacking lows for me as a stand alone combo, even with NOS tubes and speaker swaps. I'm still VERY interested in a SS22 though. If Fender could get the voicing correct, these would be killers.

Is the poor sound only on the burn channel, or on both channels? If you change tubes and it works fine, you might want to know which tube/tubes were bad, so you can keep the good ones as spares.
