I'm in the process of sourcing new pre-amp tubes for my '65 DRRI. I've read about all the usual brands available on the net. Has anyone gone away from the stock Groove Tubes and had positive results with other brands like Electro Harmonics, Tung Sol, Mullard, JJ...etc.

Looking for some tried and proven advice on improved noise reduction while providing better musical dynamics.

Thanks for your input.

JJ's are great for the money.But if you really want improvement also change those output tubes to JJ 6V6S's and rebias the amp.
I just did exactly that,all JJ's,with my DRRI.Also changed all the transformers to Mercury Magnetics.Major improvement.Next will be the electrolytic caps.The Illinois brand caps will be replaced with Sprague Atom caps.It should then sound like a Deluxe Reverb should sound.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the JJ's. I read about rebiasing the 6V6 tubes on the eurotubes site... there's a detailed video on the process. I'll have to pick up a bias probe as well. Good luck with your remaining mods.

I can reccomend Tung Sols with great certainty. They are very consistent when bought from dougstubes. He does all testing for microphonics, transconductance, emissions, shorts, and leaks. They are a very dynamic tube with good saturation and compression. They sound GREAT in the DRRI. I have them in mine. ;) The groove tubes sound good too but seem to not last long. :(

Hey StratTone,
thanks for your recommedation on the Tung-Sols. I did some more digging around and found more positive info and references on them...here's what I'm finally going with in my DRRI...

pre-amp tubes :
CH1=12ax7 mullard reissue+tungsol reissue 12AX7
CH2=12ax7 mullard reissue+tungsol reissue 12AX7

phase inverter and reverb drivers: electro harmonix 12AT7

power tubes: matched pair of tung-sol 6V6GT

rectifier tube: JJ GZ34/5AR4

Perfect selection! ;) The only thing Ican stress if buying from someone that does a good testing and burn in on new tubes. It is hard to read reviews about tubes because you never know of the condition of the tubes someone is giving a review for. I have bought many tubes from different places and I test them. I have seen many many "new" tubes that don't test 100%. So I am sure some bad reviews come from a new tube not being in the best condition right out of the box. I will put my name on the line for KCA tubes and dougstubes.com. Both guys test tubes great before shipping and you will get a great tested tube from them. Let me know how it goes.
