As you may know, John has been hanging with Clapton these last few years...and I hear a lot of Clapton's "women" tone in Mayer's. The trick is to roll off the tone control down to about 5-6, and play with the volume control too, down to 5-6 to clean it up, up to 10 to increase overdrive. This will cost you nothing and in my opinion, will get you close to Mayer's tone than other costly alternatives. Oh, of Mayer is a fan of position #4 on the stat (neck & middle).

''Woman Tone'" historically, was generated using a Les Paul through a Marshall, the amp on full volume and the tone control rolled off the guitar signal to the amp.

Clapton's equipment today is quite different and I am of the opinion that not only are his Bassman amps modded but that a great deal of his sound generated through a mix at the board.

I did notice that their guitar tones during the 'Crossroads' performance in Bryant Park, NYC, were nearly identical. Although not in this case, much of Mayer is distinctly SRV influenced and generated both in sound, and style of playing.l

Your offering is helpful but muddied. It wouild be best if you were to clearly differentiated between your suggested amplifier settings and guitar settings remembering that, in much of today's equipment, the master volume is what the listener hears after the final mix.

Another thing to observe is that, with both artists, a great deal of the soloing is done from or above the 12th fret. The strings tend to 'sing' and sustain more in those positions and the amp settings will tend to enhance those qualities and the sound we all 'hear' that the original writer is desirous of achieving.

Thanks.
