I never said anything about poor customer service. Cintiloi's Music is still in business and can easily beat GC prices. He loves kids and even has dogs in the store. It's where many professional musicians shop in the Philadelphia area. Bennie Cintioli is still there and has been since 1960. The small Mom & Pop shops were driven out by the big box stores, not bad service. They weren't "angry stores". When you were a regular, you were part of the family and were welcomed with a hug or a handshake and called by your first name. They would lend you an amp if you got stuck in an emergency. I was even lent new equipment just to give an opinion. A child was never discouraged to play, they just didn't allow kids to come in and abuse the equipment without a parent like GC and Sam Ash do. It's a shame because many of the guitars at my local GC are missing hardware and have belt rash on them. It's the kids at the local GC who just sit there and wank for hours with no intention of buying anything that get me annoyed. Some parents just drop off their kids at GC and go shop for a couple hours at Target. Since when is a music store a babysitting service? I'm not saying it's your kid, but it's somebody's kid.

+1000!

There isn't any single piece of gear in a Guitar Circus that I couldn't afford to buy, but those jerk-offs will never see a dime of my money again.

I only deal with the big box stores when it's absolutely necessary. I had to buy my Egnater there, I had no choice, because GC and MF (MF  ) are the only ones who carry them, but I bought my speaker cables from Cintioli's. Bennie did more for me than any big box store. All the GC sales guys care about is commission. That's the bottom line, and GC has some sort of whack job commission system. Bennie has always been fair with me. When I bought the Egnater at GC, I had a 15% coupon, they would only use it towards the head even though they sell the amp as a half stack. What horseholes.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Radios and TV's aren't tube driven guitar amps. Like I said, I never brought an amp home in a box. Most of the music stores in my area when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's didn't even have the boxes. You bought the one on the floor. Same with guitars. Bu,t at that time, they had a you broke it you bought it policy. No kids were even allowed to touch the equipment without a parent present, and you had to go through a sales person to try something out. Anyone who grew up in Phila, Pa and went to Music City, 8th Street Music or Cintioli's Music knows what I'm talking about.

If you tried it in the store, it would have save you two trips to GC.

i miss those days. thats when there were real guitar stores.

yep, when you bought a guitar you got a professional setup, a strap, some strings and a handful of picks. So much for the "mean stores". My Mom and Pop shop asks what kind and gauge string you use, changes them and adjusts the setup to your liking before you leave the store. Cintioli's still does that for you. My GC hands you a box and says drop it off in a couple of weeks and we'll take a look at it.

So here is the question - how much is the local charm/service worth? Cash, that is. If the local shop matches GC with a 15% discount, then great (remember that GC, like everyone comes way down off MSRP already). With a $400 guitar, the discount is $60 - so it would cost more for a good set up than you would save. But if you are buying a good american strat or a gibson, for say $1500, the discount is $225! So you save a bunch even after the set up. When it comes to amps - my AC15 - I saved $90 with the discount and no set up necessary. I did buy the one off the floor, so I got to play it for an hour first and when I had a problem with my blues juniors, they took them both back without so much as a question.

My local bookstore just closed too - pushed out by barnes and noble and amazon (and borders got shut by amazon). I will miss the local shop, but was it worth paying twice as much for the book, or waiting five days to order one at full price and having to drive back to get it?

Progress is a fuzzy term.

Bennie's setups are always free. That's how he does business. if the guitars $100 or $10,000. Doesn't matter Cintioli's prices have always bee better than Sam Ash, Manny's and now guitar center. He's been around in business for 50 years. When other stores were closing, he moved to a bigger space. He owns his space and has very little overhead. He's just a smart business person. He also takes stuff back no problem. Even if you decide you just don't like the equipment. Some things go beyond saving a couple of bucks. The guys at my GC are a bunch of sneaky unethical tools. I'm loyal to people who treat me well.

Hi changelives... This is pretty spooky because a couple months ago I returned two BJR NOS amps to GC for the SAME TWO REASONS. You aren't in Houston are you? (lol) I did stay with Fender after that but ended up buying a '65 SRRI after playing for a few hours through it to prove to myself it was worth it. Two of the groove tubes went microphonic on it about a week after I brought it home but a better quality tube set later and it is still going strong.

Sounds like Fender got a bum batch of Blues Juniors. If you search around the web you find that the busted reverb is actually not unusual. The truth is that Fender should just recall this batch so as to not inconvenience its customers this way, but that would be too expensive. Ah... maybe these big companies like Fender are as bad as these big box store guitar stores!!

Fender did not "get" a bum batch of Blues Juniors......

They built the damn things -- then apparently tossed any and all QA/QC production protocols under the bus and shipped them.

Many of us 'saw this movie' before and today's audience isn't any more receptive to it than we were.

It was called "The CBS Era".

why is it that the blues jr and the hotrod series amps continue to get the shiot end of the stick when it comes to design and QC?

I am guessing ,less attention to detail =less cost.As long as people keep buying them , they will keep putting them out as is.I know they recently made some upgrade to the III series , but the NOS Blues Jr is the old version still.
