Hi all - guitar newbie here (six months)

I am on my second Blues Junior NOS this month. The first, bought new from GC that didn't have any reverb. I returned it and they gave me one from the floor. On this one, when I play it with the guitar facing the amp - not at a high volume at all - it starts buzzing a bit and then the sound just shuts off. If I turn the amp off and then back on in a minute, it works again, but then happens a few minutes later. The buzzing seems to be caused by the lower notes.

Am I doing something wrong or do I have a second bum amp in a month?

Thanks all

It sounds like another lemon to me.

Let GC squeeze it and insist that they give you a new amp (check it out completely before you leave the store).

As in squeeze it until they choke on the sour nectar of yet another defective product unsuitable even for lemonade.

Hey Arjay, this sounds like classic case of amp instability ala "parasitic oscillations." Do you find amps with circuit boards, esp the ones with thin tracings more susceptible to these kinda instabilites? The board's construction adds a certain amount of capacitance to the circuit, which is hard to take into account.

Good luck with amp #3.

I've never brought an amp home in a box. GC sells the product, they know what their selling and should insist you try it before you take it home. Fender manufactured two lemon amps, GC actually sold them to you. If you want to stay with Fender, you may want to aim your sites a little higher than the HRD series and go for a reissue or do what I did and go with Egnater. I was a Fender guy for over 40 years. Now I'm an Egnater guy. If I ever went back to Fender amps, it would be a used SF or BF amps. Not a current production sample.

I get it with GC, but when I buy a Sony radio at Best Buy, I don't need to open it and play it before I leave - I trust Sony. Two bad amps in a row is unacceptable. That is BAD quality no matter how you swing it.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Radios and TV's aren't tube driven guitar amps. Like I said, I never brought an amp home in a box. Most of the music stores in my area when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's didn't even have the boxes. You bought the one on the floor. Same with guitars. Bu,t at that time, they had a you broke it you bought it policy. No kids were even allowed to touch the equipment without a parent present, and you had to go through a sales person to try something out. Anyone who grew up in Phila, Pa and went to Music City, 8th Street Music or Cintioli's Music knows what I'm talking about.

If you tried it in the store, it would have save you two trips to GC.

Yep , I always check it out before I leave the store. Its easy to blame Fender, but alot happens between when it left the factory to when you unboxed it and plugged it in.

It could very well be that the amps were defective prior to shipping.

But I've known a lot of knuckle-draggers and slackers who work at the post office and for UPS and I've seen the results of their "work".

I used to work in a warehouse back in my HS days and the workers were brutal
with the merchandise. You figure, at some point they get moved around with forklifts.Amps are probably stacked on pallets.

So I went back to GC and gave them the NOS. Played a bunch of amps - but i just had too bad a taste in my mouth for Fender after two bum amps in a row. Even if it is their handlers. I ended up taking home a Vox AC-15 off the floor after playing it for an hour ( I took you advice about playing it first - although it is hard to buy off the GC floor knowing how many people may have abused it). I hate having to use GC but they offer such amazing discounts and sales, that the local guys can't/won't match. Alas....

BTW, to the guy who longs for the angry stores from the sixties that didn't encourage kids to play and had bad customer service - that is why they don't exist anymore. The world learned that we can have both good customer service, friendly staff and value prices - and we all wanted it. I mourn the mom and pop shops but I have a 13 year old son who has been playing for six years and he loves to go to GC and play lots of equipment. They are happy to pull guitars for him and let him jam for hours. I will take that any day.
