So, I've tried out TWO of the Fender Super Sonic Twin Combos... there is an "Arena/Club" switch that's supposed to step the amp down to 25watts from 100watts for when you're playing smaller venues.

I couldn't notice ANY difference when going back and forth.

Shouldn't there be quite a significant difference?

Fender, WTF is up with this? This is the reason I paid for this amp.

The results of flipping the switch are very subtle, as they have been since fender installed that option on the twins many years ago.
25 watts is still very loud !!!
You would most likely see the difference more clearly at higher volume settings where the 25 watt option would cause the amp to break up sooner and still be loud as hell.

+1 One watt is still loud. I found that out with my Egnater. Usually you'll lose a bit of headroom and punch.
Here's an article on watts vs volume.

YEP ~

i have the pro tube Twin~Amp which is 100 W clean/dirty channels and the 25W to 100W SWITCH.
at first I was scratching my head too~
never realized that 25 W of tube power was THAT loud

then it dawned on me:
Don't think of it as 100W that can go DOWN to 25 W, rather think of it as 25watts that can go UP
to 100.
My first outside gig with it made having that switch worth something then. flipping it to 100 sounded alot better. And in the end there is not that much difference, i thought it would be cooler to have a 5W/12W/25W option for normal inside gigs.
My DRRI would be really cool with this option, instead of having to have a tube screamer.
I love the way a cranked tube amp sounds (who doesn't). The only tube amp i own that i can crank at home for long periods is my Champ- which sounds great for practice or brushes. If i crank my DRRI it starts to drown the drums, so i have to turn it away from everyone or use a tarp or blanket.
I need a 5E3 maybe.........

I find loundess very similar to dB relationship. Logarithmic, not linear. To double the apparent volume you need to multiple the total wattage available by 10. Speaker effieciency and room size being constant.

So, to double 10 watts, you need to go to 100 watts. And vice-versa. Whereas, to double apparent volume with a speaker, you need +6dB sound pressure level (SPL) change. That's why a 102dB efficiency speaker option is so much more noticeable compared to, say, a stock 96dB speaker.

Or doubling or quading the number of the same speakers (stacking) has a bigger impact with same amp. Than going from a 25 watt to a 100 watt amp, but using the same speaker.

Also, the method in which wattage and SPL dB is measured varies. RMS being a good conservative & consistent measurement between various speakers and amps.

Sorry, for all the yaddy-yaddy-yaddy...

I have an old red knob twin.It has the same 100 watt to 25 watt switch and you literally cannot tell the difference when switched.Maybe outside which is the only place I can play this amp past number 1 ...lol!!

I gigged Fri/Sat with my new SS Twin and used "club" mode. It's still too loud for a small venue since I could only "crack" volume on the burn channel. The clean channel was easy to regulate volume. Not all clubs are as small so I think in the future I amy use the effects loop as a volume cut rather than boost, (patch it with a cord and leave it on attenuated).

Has anyone done this so they could use a "large" amp to overcome a small room?

You're close, but not quite there.

To double amp power, you increase by 3 dB. To double SPL you increase by 10 dB.

Starting at 25 watts, a 3 dB increase gives you 50 watts. Another 3 dB increase gives you 100 watts. So 100 watts is 6 dB more powerful than 25 watts.

Now, let's ignore speaker effeciency and room gain for a minute and assume that 25 watts gives you 100 dB SPL. The power to SPL relationship looks like this:

25 watts = 100 dB SPL
50 watts (+3 dB) = 103 dB SPL
100 watts (+3 dB) = 106 dB SPL
200 watts (+3 dB) = 109 dB SPL
267 watts (+1 dB) = 110 dB SPL

So, to double the loudness of the 25 watt amp, you need an amp that produces almost 300 watts!

Here is an interesting SPL chart that goes a little bit beyond what you normally find:
