I am looking for a practice amp for the following needs:

1) Portable
2) Excellent Clean Tone
3) Versatile - has the ability to get that SRV blues tone
4) Can get some good high gain when needed for leads
5) under $500
6) Can be played at night while family sleeps

All of these are important. I have seen and read many great reviews on the Super Champ XD. My only concern is that I did own a Mustang 3 and I couldn't get use to it; it sounded a little artifical/too digital. I realize the SCXD is a tube amp, but not "true" tube amp that we all know. Does it compare with the Mustang as far as tone goes? My local guitar store does not carry them, so testing one is not an immediate option. Any opinions and or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

JB

Yep

I think the super champ is going to be a great amp for you. in fact you could buy 2 and easily stay under $500 if you buy it used.

Of course you can't really nail a SRV tone without cranking something pretty loud, but you'll get some great blues and rock tones and can play them at whisper volumes.

I will also recommend the Mustang III and IV. I know they aren't tube amps, but you can really get some amazing tones out of them. I have the III and love it. You can play it at a whisper or even stick on headphones and crank it. You will be amazed at the authenticity of the vintage tones.

I have to agree with PM he is spot on in his assessment. I have the SCXD and love it. I also just got a GDEC3 Thirty and it is an amazing amp. You can get some great tones from it. My advice is try them all out and get what you like!

The Super Champ XD is a nice sounding little amp, and based on your requirements, I think it's perfectly suited for what you're looking for.

+1 on the SCXD as a practice amp. For the money they are hard to beat. However if you have a budjet of $500 you could look at some other options. There are some higher end amps in that price range like the Blues Jr and some would recommend the Pro Jr. However as a good inexpensive all around practice amp the SCXD is a good choice. There is a nice demo on youtube of the different voicings of the SCXD by a guy named Don Anderson I believe. His videos give you a pretty good insight as to what it can do.

The Fender SCXD is a victory for Fender's amp "emulation". I've played thru lots of amps the are suposed to "sound like" a tweed tone/blackface/silverface/ etc. I bought it because I was in need of something that I could take on the bus to get to rehearsals. I live in an apartment, so it's hard to turn an amp up enough to really check out the tone. When I got to the first rehearsal I ran thru the numbers on the 16 sound selector. First let me say that channel 1 (the 'other') channel. It nails Blackface. Put a tube screamer in front of that channel. Now, back to the 16 channel channel. #1/2/&/3 are tweed sounds in higher and higher overdriven versions of tweed. Those channels are great. #3 is pretty out there on overdrive. Channel 16 just before 1 is a really pure and almost jazzlike output. Pedals sound really cool ahead of that one. I can't say any more because those are all the channels that I used. I did install a Weber speaker and JJ tubes. Bought the pedal, etc. Now I'm selling it because I bought a Custom Vibrolux Reverb. I put in $230.00 in tubes. I bought the Supreme "Moyer" based Cap and complete changeover kit to where Channel 1 sounds like a '63 Brownface Vibroverb. Channels on the "Bright" side inputs have the Blackface '63 Vibroverb sound. Before I got all of the amp work done I bought a piece of equipment that I've always wanted. It's a '63 Fender Stand Alone Reverb Tank. I found it on e-bay and got it on a $427.00 bid. It had never been used. Having that reverb with the amp dead quiet, and with a TS-808 plus some Visual Sounds stuff really get "that sound" that E/C gets with his Strat. My final mod will be to get another Clapton 25 db Mid Boost kit and have this Strat routed and I'll put that in. The Mid Boost mod sounds good when it's not even turned up. It's always "on" so your Strat always has that "on steroids" presence. I never play my Les Paul anymore. That maple fretboard on the Strat & the super comfortable body. Great for hammering and pulling off. "Hammer On"!

Have a SCXD but haven't played it since I got my Mustang III. That's at home and at small gigs. The SCXD just can't match the tones on the Mustang at low or high volume.
