Looking to buy an 81 SFDR. What might be worn out and how much to freshen up this beauty? Assume moderate wear.

What signs to look for to understand if it is in good condition?

Thanks to the Gurus.

By 1981 Fender had switched back to the blackface cosmetics -- I'm not certain you'll find a silverface from that year. As well, you may not find a DR from that year at all. Shortly after 1980 FMI began to re-vamp their entire line and many vintage-named amps became "II" models.

It was advertised as an 81 and the picture was a Silver face. Seller may have the year wrong.

The EIA codes stamped on the trannies will tell the tale.

With any amp that old, you'll want to replace the filter caps as they're older than 20 years. Won't affect your tone, but will prevent other damage downstream.

Check the electrical cord to ensure the outer insulation is in good shape and not worn/frayed or covered with electrical tape - it's a cheap replacement and getting shocked isn't worth it.

Tubes - you may need new preamp and power tubes, and the bias will need to be set according to the tubes you're running. For 6V6, I really like my NOS Mazda 6V6, but there are plenty of new and NOS flavors to choose from.

Once you figure out what year the amp is, plenty of folks on the board here who can help suggest any other tweaks or mods needed.

Please note - unless you're a competent electrician/electronics person, all of the above should be performed by an amp tech.

you need to post a link to an offsite picture website, like the free photobucket, and then you can use the IMG tag to embed the URL of the picture you want. Works pretty well.
