The stock Sovtek 12AX7WC is quiet, but I want more character from that stage.
I´ve bought a pair of JAN Sylvania 12AX7WA´s, tried each one on the V1, the tone was brighter, more open, what I wanted, but the HUM/BUZZ was too loud! Both of the JAN´s were too noiser! So putted the Sovtek back in, silent again. But that muffled tone.

I´m considering those for my next try:
RCA 7025 GREY PLATE
RCA 12AX7A BLACK PLATE

I was still considering a JAN Philips 5751 for it, but I don´t wanna drop the volume or the drive on it, and a few guys told the tone was a little darker than 12AX7´s.

I´m already settled with a pair of Telam EL84 for the power tubes, and man that sounds sweet!

Tell me what you guys think, and your experiences with V1 on the ProJrs. Thanks!

What do I think?

I think there were many excellent reccommendations made in your original thread that you chose to ignore.

I think that you will never be satisfied with the sound of this amp.

I think the sound of an amp is based on the entire signal chain and not just individual tubes.

That's what I think.

Hello there bluesky, nice to hear from you again.

Yes you guys recommended me JAN 7025 from tubedepot for $150 each! Still a friend of mine has the $ and bought it, two weeks later, arrived a non-labeled 12AX7A, and a paper from tubedepot saying "This is similar in construction to a JAN 7025, just labeled 12AX7A USA." If the guy paid $150 bucks for a JAN 7025, I think thats what he should get right ? He just sended it back, and asked for refund. With $150 bucks on the pocket he can get tons of 12AX7A made in USA on ebay.

And too recommended JAN 5751, but I don´t wanna tame the amp down, just want it to sound sweeter. Aldo I tested it with a Sovtek 5751 from a friend, my drive tones moved from 4-5 to 6-7, not what I´m after, still I tried clipping the NFB on the amp, it got much wilder and hot, but still too much headroom for my taste. The guys from tubestore claims they have a special batch of JAN Philips 5751 that are not lower gain not darker too. But just sounded hype to me. But if someone comes up and say it´s all that, I might try that route as well.

And I´m not ignoring the previous posts mate, in fact I got the Telams EL84 and the Weber Signature from that. I guess if you are somewhat in stress time on the forums you begin getting nervous and frustrated, and start batching on others, I know, happened to me before. I just started this due to some rude posts of people disregarding my $400 bucks amp at the old topic. That all I can get for now. So I want to get the most of it. Still I´ve spent $40 on speaker and another $30 on telams, really cheap. Just want to find a nice V1 now. Keep it cool mate, we are all ignorant in some subjects. I´m here to learn, and help were I can. Not to judge anybody.

IMO, the V1 in the ProJr´s are essential for tone, the most shaping character of the amp comes from that phase. The V2 is just a PI and for that a good 12AT7 will get the power tubes working nice and hot. And as I said for the power tubes I´m already settled.

So my concern here is the V1.
Anyhow thanks for the input.

Wow! $150 for one RCA 7025? I've used Raytheon black plate (perferably 1950's JAN-JRP mil spec) or 1950-60's Raytheon 12AX7A (even some of the Matsushita made ones) with pretty good luck. In terms of tone and quietness for input stage.

Usually, you can get them for around $50 each. NOS/NIB (military boxed):

Pretty similar in construction to the RCA´s, have done some research and seen nice comments about them. And the non-jan versions could be found on ebay for a few bucks only.
Thanks for the suggestion mate! Raytheon 12AX7A Black Plate on my list to try.

Joaakorb,

Here's a little blurb on 12AX7 and 5751. I'd say one of the best is a 1950's Raytheon 5751 "windmill getter" tube. But, they are just too $$$$ and hard to find NOS/NIB that test well & are quiet (not the rejects of the lot). You maybe surprised at the tone of the cheaper Matsushita made Raytheons (same tooling). Just a thought. Good hunting!

Prolly best 5751 ever made:

I´ve found this one, it´s expansive, but not that expansive.
I´ll stay tuned to see if I can get one in auction!
Raytheon seems to make some fine tubes!

Thanks mate!

Good luck with the auction. You are bidding from the (in)famous Greengirl. I never had dealings with her. Some love her and a few....

Hope the tube works out well.

This one probably works just as well. Dead quiet in my BDRI and sounds great.

And about half the price! Man every direction I go leads me back to those JAN Philips 5751. Maybe its carma and I need to try one of those. Maybe as well a JAN Philips 12AT7WC Balanced for the PI, they´re just too cheap on tubestore.

JFYI. You may wanna watch this one. Maybe bid $43.01, at the last moment. Just a thought. NOS/NIB Raytheon 12AX7A are getting pretty dang rare (too many ppl know about them now... ). I bought 3 NOS/NIB sleaves (5 tubes per sleeve) for $100, ten years ago. Very lucky deal. And that included one sleave of CBS 7318 and one BP TungSol 6CG7. Transaction was in the MOCA Art Museum parking lot. I felt almost like I was buying China White.

I used to used NOS/NIB Dutch made Philips Miniwatt ECC83 a lot, in the mid 1990's. Until ppl started to find out these puppies sound a LOT like the famous 1960's Mullard ECC83. Started out you could get 10 for $125. Now they are $125 each.

Good luck on whatever tube you finally put in that Holy V1 position!

I´ve just bid on this NOS GE 7025, hope it sounds as good as it looks. Looking for a GE 12AT7 for the PI as well...

My experience with gray short plate GE 12AX7 is they have a warm tone. Very consistent. And last forever and forever (I hope I don't jinx you).

FWIW... 1950-1960 GE 5Y3GT are great buys, too.

I´m doubtful between those two for the V2/PI, one is USED JAN, the other is NOS:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120738559511&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

And this one looks NOS JAN, good:

I´ve seen getters O, halo, square, but what is that S ROD type ?
