Hi My DRRI amp is five years old and it is stock except for pre amp and main tubes rec is a jj GZ34. I have RCA in V1 V2 V4 for the reverb a jan 9565 and sylania 12at7wc in V6. I put some tung sol 6v6 GT in not long ago they sound very nice in these amps. but what you here on the forums is that they are not so great and fail after only hours of use. Hope this is just a bad batch. Anyway i have two pear of AWV Radiotron 6v6Gt tubes mite put them in soon than later if the tung sols playup. What do you think out there about the AWV 6v6 Gt tubes Will they sound any good in my amp..Cheers..From..Aus...PS i like the stock speaker to...

What is your bias set at?

For 6V6GT I set mine between 18-20 mA, my RCA 6V6GTA are set around 22-23 mA...

Are you not happy with your DRRI's tone now?

The Amp is new to me and I'm checking out different things on it. It may well all go back to stock.

I was asking cause you said "I may find that the DRRI is not the amp for me"...

Maybe you can tell us what tone you're after and we can give you some ideas... a DR or DRRI setup properly is one sweet sounding amp.

Fritz mod?

Hey Beaubs,
Yes, the Fritz Mod, is a popular mod with couple of others.
I don't have the link but here in the Forum in other DRRI posts you'll find reference.
I'll look it up and post back for you.

I performed the Fritz Mod myself in about 20 minutes. I installed some NOS RCA gray glass 6v6s when one stock 6v6 developed a strange harmonic on "D". That's it. The tubes are not matched and are about 18 and 15 on the bias scale. My amp came with a Celestion Blue.

Use caution with this speaker -- it's only rated for fifteen watts.

Diming this amp will likely cause you grief.

Chet, I have the JJs in mine, and per this recommendation set the bias at 25 mA. It is sweet and thick (well as thick as a DRRI can get I guess, but I like it). Arjay will know better, but I have read that the JJs can take a higher bias than most other tubes and still live to tell the tale next year. Some others may fry at the higher bias. On an email, Bob said the JJs could go to 28mA if you want early breakup.

That was my understanding as well. I had a client three years ago request the JJ's while the amp was on my bench for a filter-and-bias cap upgrade. But I just couldn't bring myself to set the bias that high. I sent him on his way (a happy camper) with 24.5 mA and the amp is playing and sounding quite beefy. He'd also upgraded to an alnico Jensen Blackbird and I was quite pleasantly surprised with his tube and speaker combination.

I haven't had a problem with it. Since Fender thought enough of the speaker to send the amp out of the factory with the Blue on board I'll assume it can take it. But I haven't had the amp past 7.

The JJ 6V6S is kinda a hybrid tube. It has the guts very similar to the old 5881 (I believe based on the 5881WXT inerds). That's why the tube envelope is a bit taller than the standard 6V6GT.

It was designed this way to take the higher plate voltages and idle bias, common in older Fender amps that used 1950-70's US made 6V6GT, and GTA.

So, if you have a good matched pair, it's ok to bias them above 25mA. Just watch for usual signs of overheating.

Good luck!

My DRRI is in the shop getting the Fritz mod done and getting biased.

V-1 and V-2 are now NOS JAN Phillips 5751's
V-3 is an EH 12AU7 (Experimenting with this one)
V-4, V-5 , V-6 are Tung-Sol 12AX7's
V-7 and V-8 are JJ 6V6S's
V-9 is a SovTek 5AR4
