Have you tried any Mods to your DRRI? Whether it be tubes, speaker, or ?.

Indeed.

Mine has the Fritz mod, a multi-tap output tranny, NOS tubes, and a larger cab with a 15-inch JBL installed.

It's my go-to amp.

Did some research on the Fritz Mod, and just made an appointment to get it done.

I did the Fritz Mod to mine a couple years ago. I enjoy the amp so much more now. Now I can play through the Normal channel, using the awesome reverb, without the harsh brightness that renders the Vibrato channel useless with overdrive pedals. I've played this amp every day since the mod with zero problems. I recommend it 100%.

Also, as with any tube amp, tube swaps can make a big difference, especially if you have one or more not performing 100%.

I'm happy with the factory Jensen speaker, although others claim to have benefitted from speaker swaps. The JBL seems to be quite popular on this forum. I'd like to try one.

I also have some tube changes I'm going to do including THD Yellow Jacket conversion to Solid State Rectifier and to EL-84's
The speaker will be swapped out to a Scumback.

If you find this necessary it pains me to report that you bought the wrong amp in the first place.

I don't feel that it is absolutely necessary. Just trying some things.

Those "things" are guaranteed to strangle the hearty and robust Fender tone right out of your DRRI and turn it into a fizzy sterile whiney little shitbox.

I have to agree with Arjay. I like to experiment with my DRRI, but I would never consider doing that, the 6V6 and tube rectifier is what makes this amp a Deluxe Reverb.

The Fritz mod, different speakers, and trying out different 6V6 tubes and preamp tubes is as far as I'll go. But to each his own, maybe you'll come up with a sweet sounding amp, but it won't be a DRRI.

Thanks. Aside from the Fritz Mod and Speaker change all I am doing is trying different tubes and tube combos. I may find that the DRRI is not the amp for me. Who knows.

You know, for the price of the Yellow Jacket adapters and a pair of good EL84--- you might want to search a bit for some NOS or high testing 6V6G coke bottles. They bias at same idle current and take same plate voltage.

Sylvania VT-107B are the best. RCA/Cunningham are very good, too. But Canadian made Westinghouse, GE, or Marconi are also good. Maybe not as buttery smooth as the US made ones. Go for grey glass ones, only.

But, the 6V6G has a very smooth tone, slow Bluesy onset of overdrive. As good as any grey glass RCA 6V6GT or GTY. Yet, doesn't compress the tone like an EL84 is going to do. In fact the 6V6G (VT-107B, at least), may have a bit more headroom than its 6V6GT cousin. Besides those coke bottle are the sexiest looking tubes around.

Grey glass has smoothest midrange. You "used" to be able to buy them for $50-75 matched NOS/NIB pair (2-3 years ago). Maybe $75-100 per matched pair NOS/NIB now. Not many left. These are all early 1940-50's made tubes. Best years for 6V6 types.

I just bought my DRRI in March so I'm not even considering doing anything to my amp/speaker until it's been well played and broken in.

Having said that I think the first thing I'll do will be to install better quality tubes and have the bias checked.
