So I really like the bright nature of my Blues Jr. III. It brings out the color and presence of humbuckers but also manages to be one of the best sounding amps I've ever played my strat through. yada, yada.

In contrast, every time I plug into my deville it just seems a bit too dark. I've messed with all kinds of preamp tubes and found a svetlana in V1 and a JAN 5751 in V2 got it a lot closer, which I'm happy about.

Do you think a lot of the remaining brightness I am looking for is the difference between the EL-84's and the 6L6's?
(maybe I should try the yellow jackets?)

Or are the amps just different enough in design that it cannot be achieved? (I am only assuming it can be since they are both rod rod amps)

Or is it because the Blues Junior III has the sparkle mod?

I've been dwelling over this for quite a while. Input would be much appreciated!

Definitely.

That, plus the larger cab and multiple speakers in the HRD.

Blues Jr's always sound tinny and boxy to my ear with the OEM speaker and the tiny enclosure.

Personally I have never liked the way a strat sounds thru a Bjr.Not enough bottom end for my tasts. Now humbuckers is a whole other matter.Humbuckers make this amp sing, but el84s sound aggressive sounding to my ears.6l6s have that thump the bigger bottles have and
really compliment strats IMO.

Ricks with "toasters" sound pretty good through a BJr......very "Vox-ish".

Without a doubt. EL84's and EL34's are brighter and more aggressive than a 6L6 or 6V6.
I can blend the power tubes in my Egnater Rebel it has both 6V6 and EL84 power tubes.
The Blues Jr's sound boxy and tinnt to me too. IMO, A bigger extension cab does wonders for that amp.
