Hi folks,

Spotted a used 64 Vibroverb Custom (with Diaz mods) and would really appreciate the thoughts of any current or ex users regarding pros/cons. I have been looking at many different amps of late - the most important factor being blackface cleans and high headroom so that the amp can be multipurpose (blues, classic rock, jazz, southern rock, indie etc.)

It's pretty much mint and entirely stock, but its a 110v model and so would need a step up transformer to run it here in the uk. Would that add any extra noise to the circuit at all?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I use a 64VVC and love it, sounds amazing. Takes pedals very well. The reverb is great. No mid control but that's ok with me. I never use the mod switches, the stock set up is fine. The only con is that it's very loud. I usually run it at 2-1/2 for bedroom levels and it still sounds sweet. A used one should cost about $1500 but I've seen them go for less. It's a great amp.

Thanks for your reply Voodoo Blues.

Great to hear it runs pedals well - my current board has a London Fuzz, HBE UFO, Vision Wah, Pickle Vibe, MXR Super Comp, Mosfet Fulldrive 2, OCD, Supa-trem and a Strymon El Capistan - so that's an important factor. I was never that keen as to how my Silverface Twin worked with the dirt pedals to be honest.

You shouldn't have any problems, my pedals include a '69 SR, OCD, Timmy, Fuzzhead, TS808, Zendrive, Vox Wah and a Chicken Salad and they all sound good through this amp. Even just plugging the guitar straight in, the amp sounds amazing, crystal clear tone to die for. I run it with the Treb on 6 and vary the Bass between 3-6 to brighten/darken the tone.

What a great amp. I've had mine since 2007. The Vibroverb offers classic Fender blackface sounds and alot of usable headroom. Basic EQ controls - which is all you need. Great reverb and tremolo. The 15" speaker provides a nice beefy tone. I rarely use the Diaz mods. and never the s/s rectifier mode. I play straight through - no pedals. Nice solid Blues tone with a Strat (w/ Fralin Blues set). I will at some point, however, upgrade the stock tubes and put in a D130F speaker. Hard to see how you could lose. Good luck.

The '64 Vibroverb "recipe" was one of Mr. Fender's magical combinations where everything just clicked into harmonious accord -- the 40-watt, tube-rectified chassis and a single speaker with 177 square inches of radiating cone area. It's a tragedy that Don Randall had other plans and convinced St. Leo to dump this platform before it really had a chance to develop a fan base.

Mine's a skillfully-assembled clone, with a '69 Super Reverb as the donor chassis. The AA1069 circuit revision has been back-dated to AA763 specs, with a new Merc-Mag O/T to provide the requisite 8Ω secondary to feed a JBL D130F......

I'd love to see FMIC offer this amp again, perhaps as a standard blackface re-issue without the hand-wired board and the Diaz mods.

Thank you for all your positive responses guys. I'm gonna try and procure the amp - finances allowing! It looks exactly what I'm after!

Would any of you be able to offer any opinions of comparing the cleans of the VV to say, a two-rock?

Well, I won the amp auction! Probably paid too much for the sucker, but it looks mint and I have written assurance from the seller that the amp is perfect working order with only a few hours use. I've never seen one of these in the UK before, so if I dont bond with I should still be able to make my money back.

Will post pics once I've collected her.

Nice score 8)

Now what i would do. . . is probably this......

Find out what power requirements the amp has, get a stepDOWN transformer 230/110v and locate it inside the cabinet.
The fuse in the plug will protect the cable and TFM primary but its good practice to fit an inline fuse on the transformer secondary. unless the amp internal fuse is suitable and electrically "close" to it.

Just my 2 pennorth worth.
