Hey all

Looking for a bit of advice :)

Based on the research I have done and checking it over I think that the speaker in my 1996 deluxe 112 plus combo has died...bit of a strange scenario as there is no visible damage to the speaker but as soon as I turn it up past 2-3 on all the channels I get a horrible vibration on low frequencies.

It just suddenly started doing it at our last rehersal and I noticed the back of the speaker itself was really hot so I turned it off and left it a couple of days. Turned it on again today and it was doing it, so i tiightend all the chassis screws, no joy then opened up the cab, checked all the cables and ran the speaker outside of the cab to try and eliminate any vibration issues but still no joy :(

So i started searching online to try and get hold of a replacement...4 hours later and im still stuck

The speaker is Fender Special Design 12” 4 ohm (P/N 048878) 100 Watt

Have looked at every online parts site in the UK (that I can find) and cannot find the speaker...so I started looking at altenatives..but noone seems to have 12" 4ohm speakers.

Kinda getting out of my depth with it all now so was wondering of someone could advise if there is a suitable replacement, or somewhere I can get an original/repro speaker.

Can I use 8 or 16 ohm speakers? would that have an impact on the output?

Sorry for the long first post, any help/advice would be awesome :D

An 8Ω speaker may be used but there will be a reduction in the amp's maximum available volume. Using a 16Ω speaker is too great a mismatch IMO and may put your amp at risk. The 4Ω impedance is somewhat of a rarity -- your search may take some time. A Celestion V30 might be a suitable alternative. However, you should try wiring the amp to another 4Ω speaker load to confirm that the problem is indeed your speaker.

Thanks for the advice man!

I did wonder if 16 ohms could potentially cause serious issues :) I wish I knew someone who would lend me another 4 Ω to test it with but all my friends have newer amps which I doubt will have 4 Ω speakers in

I just found a 12" 4 Ω 150 W eminence speaker

http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/em ... 3ebd1.html

I read some pretty good reviews on harmony central for it, it can handle 50W more than the amp can give it but i guess that wouldnt be a problem, pretty good price too.

Do you or anyone have any experiences with eminence?

The thing that worries me about using an 8 Ω or a speaker with lower output is we do play pretty loud I fear it may not last long.. and my 112 plus has coped really well for years..was gutted when it went down haha

The Texas Heat should serve you well. And it's 4Ω too -- I'd jump on it, sir. I think this speaker should sound similar to the OEM driver but with a tighter bottom end. I've used the Eminence brand in several applications in the past but never specifically the Texas Heat. I've heard them in other rigs though. Great tone and great value for the $$$ (£££).

You might save the original speaker and have it re-coned as a spare. One can never have too many speakers on hand.

Yeah I think I might look into having it reconed at some point, seems a shame to throw away what will be a vintage speaker in 10 or so years haha! plus judging by the effort it took me to find another 4Ω i8t guessing they will be all but gone in a short while :)

No, 4Ω speakers will always be offered. But they're usually manufactured for very specific applications (usually OEM). Hence, their limited availability and appeal.

I had one of those Fender 048878 speakers but I gave it to a friend. In retrospect I prolly should've kept it.

Shipping a Weber across the pond to the UK (and paying the exhorbitant duties and tariffs) will likely double the speaker's price to the point at which it exceeds the value of the gentleman's amp.

Yeah I looked into weber yesterday there is 1 dealer in the UK and they dont seem to stock much and no 4Ω Im quite worried about putting an 8Ω in there because the amp does get pushed hard :)

Im pretty sure Im going to go for the eminence, intrestingly I was offered a mint USA made Frontman 212 through a friend of a friend today for £120 which made me think twice about fixing up the deluxe... So I'm torn now..may well have to do both :P

Rest assured......there are no "US-made" Frontman amps.

They're all manufactured offshore.

Weird, wonder why he said it was USA made...I thought it was a similar age to my Deluxe but looking online now Im not so sure,I cant find any info past the 212R, Im sure he said it predated the 212R :? glad I didnt offer the cash up right away haha!

My Deluxe is definitely USA made, maybe I'll just fix it up and leave it at that :D

That's what I'd do.

The early (mid-90's) Dyna-Touch line was US-made. Later, production was moved to Mexico -- where my Stage 112 DSP was manufactured.

The FM's and the Frontman's have always come from the Peoples' Republic of China or Malaysia.

I just got a Deluxe 112 and put a Jensen c12-K in it. Fantastic! That is the same speaker used in the Twin so you get some of the lush sound from 1 12. The Jensen is 4 ohm.
