greets folks.
so i just started renting a jam space with a drummer and bassist. i'm using my blues deluxe RI. normally this is a pretty decently loud amp for its size.
though when we're all jamming i can't seem to get a satisfactory tone. it sounds tinny i guess. it doesn't cut through enough.
i'm pretty sure it should suffice for this purpose.
maybe the room is too big? maybe the room reflects too much?
just wondering what i can do to try to improve the sound.
i was renting a smaller room not long ago just to record some guitar stuff through the amp and it was more than loud enough on it's own.
how do i maximize its potential in a band rehearsal setting?

An external speaker cab with a closed back will give your sound more beef. Use the cab by itself from the amp's main speaker jack in place of the internal speaker, or in combination with the internal speaker if you have the external speaker jack (BDRI). A 1x12 would work well, a 2x12 or 4x12 may be even better. The HRDlx 1x12 ext cab will fit under the amp perfectly, I use one with my HRDlx which is a very similar amp to the BDlx. :idea:

Ditto - the 112 extension cab complements the BDRI very well. It will certainly beef up your sound, as shimmilou says. It's good value for the impact it will have on your live sound. I always used it with mine and was very pleased.

+1

A bass-reflex extension cab will definitely fatten things up and give your bass and mids more definition and authority. Try one equipped with a Celestion V30 or a Greenback -- if that doesn't put a smile on your face, nothing will.

If you haven't done so, try some different tubes and proper biasing of the amp. My BDRI is set up as follows:

V1 = Philips JAN 5751
V2 = JJ 12AX7
V3 = JJ 12AT7
V4/5 = JJ 6L6GC

Power tube bias is set at 38 mA cathode current (about 36 mA plate current) at a plate voltage of 413VDC. This works out to be about 83 mV as measured at the Fender bias test point. Fender biases these amps really cold (about 60 to 65 mV at the bias test point). These amps really come alive with a good set of tubes and a hotter bias.

aw yeah thanks for the tips folks.
i've been looking for some kind of extension cab.
now i'm no expert in ohms and electronics, but is there a limitation on what kind of extension cab i can hook into the BDRI?
is my only option a 1x12 cab?

are there any things we can do to the room to clean up the sound?
like hang thick curtains or egg shells? or are those things mostly reserved for sound proofing?

yeah been thinking about changing the tubes. i've been meaning to rebias for some time now, just never got around to it yet for some reason.
i'd like to get more clean headroom. i need more volume out of the cleans. once i pass 3 or so i may as well have already stepped on a overdrive boost or something.

folks have been recommending euro tubes. i think they have a clean headroom tube kit.
where'd ya snag yours from?

If you have the factory stock Groove Tubes (which are really 5881s) they can't be biased above 70 or 75 mV at the Fender bias test point.

My tube set is this from Eurotubes, with the changes in V1 and V3 that I noted in my earlier post:

Fender Blues Deluxe-Deville Blues Option
Price: $68.00
Description: A hotter matched pair of the JJ 6L6GC's for the reissue or the original fixed bias 90's Blues Deluxe or Deville for a big warm tone along with a standard ECC83S for V1, an ECC81 for V2 to drop the gain with one balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V3. These will reduce the preamp gain for players wanting less gain.

Basically, for matching amp and speaker impedance, it doesn't matter how many speakers there are, the total impedance of the cab is all that matters. So typically, Fender cabinets will use 8 ohm speakers, a 1x12 cab is 8 ohms, a 2x12 would be 4 ohms, a 4x12 would be 8 ohms. There are other speaker impedances and wiring so check the cab total.

Check your manual for options on using external speakers (page 7, link below). There are options for using 4 ohm and 8 ohm cabs. It is also OK to use a 16 ohm cab in the mix, either by itself on the main speaker jack (V), or use two 16 ohm cabs using both speaker jacks, or use the internal 8 ohm speaker on the main speaker jack and a 16 ohm cab on the external speaker jack (W). You have to have something plugged into the main speaker jack (V) with any combination. You will get less power out of the amp if the impedance of amp and speaker are not matched (as the manual shows), but you might like the sound better with a mismatch.
