Just wondering if someone could explain to me what is the purpose of the cardboard arrangement around the input jacks of the '57 Deluxe Reissue?

I'll guess that it's some sort of safety to prevent shock or damage from kids sticking a screwdriver or something in the hole (JAG). :?:

+1

More "idiot-proofing" to keep the federal government's CPSC and Fender Legal's liability lawyers happy.

It's definitely not a feature of the original 5E3's.

My BDRI (as well as some of the high end reissues) had a metal tube cage around the power tubes. More "protection" for us "dummies" who might grab a hot power tube to see if it was working. I promptly removed mine.
