Jack, the first ones were made in Brea, California but, I think it is cool you have a Corona one. I did not even know they had made them in Corona! Does yours have the hum? Mine is clean as a whistle, no hum!

No hum. Clear as a bell. The back of mine looks the same, just Corona, CA instead. I love it! Never had any problems with it..... until now, which I'm pretty sure I need new powertubes. They are the originals and have only been in it for almost 20 years!

Cool brother! I got the original Chinese Fender tubes in mine. I have ran all current production Mullards in it before as well. I will try all JJs in there in the future. I have a Weber Signuture 10 ALNICO magnet speaker in mine. Nice sounding speaker! If it ever goes out, I'll probably either get WGS or Celestion replacement.

I'm trying to decide between EH, Mullard, and JJ as we speak. There are price differences, but seeing that you've tried different tubes, did the Mullards sound different from the originals? If so, what kind of differences did you hear? Hopefully, I'm noy asking too much.

I just love this amp!!!!

The Mullards sounded pretty much like the Chinese stock ones which sound pretty good to me. I have used JJs on my 78 Vibro Champ and, it made a big difference. I have also changed the speaker out on the VC. The speaker it came with was not original and sounded flat and brittle. I put a Jensen P8R ALNICO in it way better! Now it has a sparkle and chime. The JJ 6V6 perked up the sound. It had some Russian tubes I did not like in it. The only tube that was original in it was the RCA 5Y3 Rectifier tube. I pulled it out and put a JJ there also though. I did try two types of preamp JJs the ECC83 and the ECC803. The ECC803 I felt were too clean for the VC, I have never tried them in the PJ but, I may in the future. I like the ECC83s better in the VC. I hate tube rolling it gets confusing. Our hearing changes a little with various factors. I'm a big fan of low watt amps! The PJ is a monster 15 watter. I've jammed with loud $@! Carvins and, kept up without having it even to 8! ( In a 15' X 20' room) That is the reason we did not have them all cranked all the way.

I've been wanting to try some JJ's. After reading your post, I figure, why not! I've heard different things from different people (go figure) so I'm just going to have to hear for myself and decide what I think. Thanks for your time brother. Really appreciate it!

Just found this thread, returned to the Fender amp fold when I picked an '06 Pro Jr as a backup to my Koch Twintone II. Had a few reservations as I generally don't like 10" speakers but it was a good price. One of the preamp tubes has been changed but I cannot obviously see what it is, what I do know is that I use it now more than the Koch. I have a TC Hall of Fame reverb and now a TC Spark Booster (thanks for the winter promotion TC) and it is simply superb, plenty of clean volume, dynamic, dirty when poked, touch sensitive, quiet as a mouse. Why do you need more? I simply love it!

Well, good news. I swapped a bunch of preamp tubes in and out and the amp quieted down. Now we're cookin. I think this amp is one of Fender's best for pure tube tone, I'm glad I didn't act hastily and send it back because I might not have chanced another one. This III version sounds great to me, at least as good as my old one.

Bottom line is this: I'm on a few gear forums and, I know there are people who mod their amps more often, than changing their underwear. I find it interesting that this guy found when he swapped pre-amp tubes it quieted down his amp. Way cool! I found when I tube rolled my originals with Mullards, when I turned on the amp I had a tiny buzz or hiss. This bugged the hell out of me. I don't know why so I swapped the preamps from left to right and, the buzz went away! I have this weird if it ain't broke don't fix attitude about electronics. I feel one of the first things to consider ever changing is the speaker on a combo, if the tone is in question. These PJs are alot like a baby Marshall, probably because of the EL84 power tubes and, double 12AX7 drivers.

Hello PJ club, I have owned one since 2006 and never had that noise thing in mine.
Its made in Mexico, but it is the tweed tolex. I bought it from a friend for $200 and he's been trying to buy it back lol. This little amp is a tone Monster and LOUD as a hot rod deville !
It's all stock but I am considering doin some mods like the Fromel, Mercury tranny, and a speaker, of which I'm still undecided. I have gigged with this and it is GREAT !
When I go to Jam sessions everybody looks and laughs and make remarks like
"you don't bring a knife to a gunfight son" and
" I bet your kid is upset that you took his toy" but when the hear it "ROAR" I see them with jaws on the floor and afterwards saying "Man that amp is Killer, what great tone, what kinda amp is that?" I have used J J's all the time and they are great, the tubes that were in the amp when I got it were Groove tubes, they were o,k, but when I changed to the J J's man what a difference !
Lookin forward to your comments and suggestions on the mods n stuff.
Peace ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

PJ into a larger cabinet (1 x 12) :

I watched this with a lot of interest, he is quite 'enthusiastic'. I like the idea of the bigger cab but it is real expensive, at what point do you just get a Blues Junior. However.. I recently got a Jensen loaded 2x10 to sit under mine and that does make a difference, really opens up the tone, now my number one amp.

Couple of things

Yes I have a Pro Jr III

It's black , bought it at a pawn shop , unsure of it's age , I'm thinkin it's not very old , found it to be in pristine condition .

I kinda like the Mojo tone cabinet conversion , larger speaker idea.

Reduces the "torture chamber effect" for the guts.

That actually came out very nice. Large pine cabinets make a world of difference!

Another option is an extension cabinet.

Hi,
My first post here. You guys are probably going to think I'm nuts, REALLY nuts, but I have a real fondness for the simplicity of this little amp. That said, there's a reason they're cheap, but I figured, what the hell, the circuit is so simple, but most of the parts are a little 'junky' (the pots, the ribbons, the output transformer, the speaker, the particle board cab and baffle, etc). That said, they still sound great, I think the general circuit design is pretty cool and just perfect in its simplicity. So, I kind of am in the middle of frankensteining it with the thought, what if this thing was built back in the late 50's-early 60's? What would Leo have done?? I know he loved his Jensen 15's, but I'm only going as big as a 12.

So, I've got an old school turret board being assmebled in England out of better components, and JD Newell (US) builds these killer cabs as good as the old tweeds were built, using pine with a birch baffle, rough blonde tolex with oxblood grill cloth, and a bit larger to take a 12" speaker. Well, JD can also put in Jensens at near cost price if you buy one of his cabs, so I kind of went crazy and bought a P12N (with the bell) to match that sweet cab (hey, the price was right!!). Then it goes down to my new amp guru here in Australia (Ivan Richards), who will fit the old school turret board (some of the cap values have been increased, and a trim pot for bias), replace the pots for CTS ones, replace the input with a Switchcraft jack, completely rip out the bottom PCB that holds the valves and those ribbons, and fit ceramic sockets to keep things a little cooler, and handwire it all together. Ivan is also fitting a much larger model appropriate Mercury Magnetics (MM) output transformer, as well as a MM Henry (H3) choke.

I'm not real keen on the valves in it, so they are out for some sweet old RCA valves (a 7025 in the V1, and either a 12AX7A or a 12AT7 in the V2, undecided yet, depending on the final sound, but I also have some old Philips JAN ones and also some old GE JAN ones sitting around doing nothing too) and some nice NOS matched Telam EL84's at the end.

I'm kind of left with just the chasis and a few bits here and there, but the circuit design remains, even if it is now handwired..........should be interesting to see what comes out the other end once all is said and done.

I get that a lot of folk think of these as just a little cheap amp, and well, yeah, they are, but there's no denying how good they can be with a few tweaks (and it was the fact it sounded pretty good to start with that impressed me so much, even with all the budgte bits), why not go all out on one??? Sure I could buy something REALLY nice for the same total price, but I'm not interested, as I said, the simplicity of this circuit is just begging to be hacked into and improved a little, and I HATE more than 2-3 knobs....... so, in the end, why the hell not??

I don't know if I could still stick the Fender logo onto the new cab, I think I've gone too far to do that, but it's the inspiration for something that might be a little over-the-top, and hey, I think it will come out sounding pretty good, and exactly what I'd be after.....anyhow, will post up pics as it all moves along, should be fun (and maybe a headache or two along the way).......

Anyway, that's my Pro Jr.......

Steve
