If I can snag an Excelsior cabinet, I'd like to try to
build the Pro Jr into it with a 15" Emininence 1510.

That would look and maybe sound great, IMO.
Maybe swap out that first tube with a 5751 for
slightly less gain too?

The only way you are going to get an Excelsior cabinet any time soon is to build one! I have had one about two weeks and have fallen in love with it. My lead player just got on the waiting list to get one and he already has a Pro Junior and a Blues Junior (not to mention a DRRI). I am afraid that if you try an Excelsior you might not want your PJ!

I have one that was inspected/built in December 2009. Bought it used in April 2010 for less than half the 399.00. Made in Mexico. All original. Hardly any hum at all, way below playing volume. Absolutely my best sounding amp. Bravo Fender.

I HAVE tried one, but prefer the PJ with a 15" spkr combo.

I keep reading about people complaining about having a hum in their PJs. They must have really messed them up when they were making them in Mexico. I got mine when they first came out and, compared to the buzzy, fizzy other small amps that were out back then, it just blew them all out of the water. I guess I'm lucky. Also now they want something like $399 for them. I got mine for about $220. It was $20 more than this one Crate noise box they had, right next to it. The Crate had more controls on it but, the tone was crummy and, it was anoyingly noisey. It was a 15 watter as well. About a year later or less, I found my VC used at the same GC. Took that baby home for $160.

I have two - American tweed and Mexican black tolex. The Mexican sounds much quieter (no hum/hiss/rattles) but the tweed looks cooler.

I picked up mine in 2009. Mexico made and quiet as a church mouse. All original. Only thing I have done was check and set the bias. Sorry for that silly guitar being in the way of the amp.

I did not know you could set the bias on these! This isn't one of those weird mods people do to these to suck the tone out of them is it? I've had mine since these came out. It has been a tone monster right out of the box. I like the idea of EL84 with a Fender flavor!

I'd like to get one but I understand it doesn't start sounding really good until it gets into power tube distortion. To loud for house use. At a gig? Perhaps. Actually, now I'm starting to gas for one!

By the way, Jeff beck can make any amp sound good. :D

(didn't mean to derail your club thread.)

They sound good at low volume also. I got a Weber Signiture 10 ALNICO magent speaker in mine. The original speaker got swapped out during a warranty repair. The speaker in it now sounds as good as the original Eminence Blue Frame it came with. Using your guitar volume, you can crank the volume on the amp and, still get an excellent tone at low volume, with no hiss or hum. Put a booster in front of your guitar and, that perks it up further.

I recently picked up a Pro Jr on Craigslist for 250. It was made in 2006. I replaced the stock speaker with a Jenson C10R. I also replaced the power tubes and pre amp tubes with JJs. The amp is really quiet and sounds sweet! I love it as small practice amp. The Pro Junior is what it is...a basic no frills all tube amp.

Nice score!
