Hello one and all. I just recently bought a Hot Rod Deluxe and Im lookin into modding it a bit. I like the sound of the amp but I feel like it is holding back on me. I'm just wondering what kind of mods people have done on these little beasts to turn them into true monsters. Some things I am hoping will unleash the inner tone are putting in Electro Harmonix tubes and a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. Any input on these mods or any other are greatly appreciated :D

Hi FLOOK_of_the_band,

You might want to start by checking/setting the bias properly, as these amps have been typically biased cold from the factory and setting the bias hotter can improve the tone. You have the right idea, changing the tubes and speaker will probably have more impact on the tone of the amp than most any other mods that you can make. Of course, set the bias properly with any new output tubes.

I'd recommend selling it and not voiding the warranty. I tried to like my HRDlx but it didn't like me. It liked the repair guy better.

Seriously, like Shimm says, check the bias, try different tubes but before you do any surgery on it sell it. The warranty is transferable. You'll take a big hit in the resale value if you void the warranty. A set of JJ's helped mine, but tube opinions and tone are really subjective. the fizz more fizz distortion channels were improved slightly. No matter what I did to my HRDlx it never would up in my opinion a tone monster including running it through a variety of different speaker cabs.
